How to Acquire a Proper Oil Sample It is important to get an oil sample that is representative of what is in your system. If not done properly, your sample may have contamination from build-up or even the air in the environment. Follow these simple steps to ensure you are getting an accurate oil sample for testing. 1. Place a bucket below the sampling valve. 2. Open and shut the sample valve several times to dislodge any contaminant from internal surfaces. 3. Create an acceptable flow rate through the sample valve line into the bucket. 4. Fill the bottle one-quarter to one-third full. 5. Recap the bottle. 6. Agitate vigorously. 7. Dump oil back into the bucket. 8. Repeat these steps two additional times to remove any contaminants from the bottle and cap. 9. Fill the sample bottle to the neck or sample line, approximately 90% full. 10. Cap the bottle. 11. Shut off flow from the sample valve and appropriately discard oil collected in a bucket according to your company's policy.
