This past Saturday’s beautiful weather coupled with weeks of careful planning and coordination set the stage for success in carrying out a major work activity at the busy 82nd Street & Roosevelt Avenue Station in Jackson Heights, a bustling and vibrant neighborhood in Queens, NY. #OHLAUSA’s Judlau Contracting division executed a milestone activity that required roadway closures at both 81st and 83rd Streets so that two giant Liebherr LTM 1130 (130-ton) cranes could pick, raise, and place a total of 55 precast?I-beam concrete panels -- each weighing 5,000 pounds -- into position to form the elevated station’s new Flushing-bound platform.??Using multiple crews at both street locations, the 6-foot-wide by 12-foot-long panels were lifted 200 feet overhead to prevent impacting electrical wires.?The workers then carefully positioned the panels atop the rehabilitated steel superstructure and bolted and tack-welded them securely in place.?The LTM 1130 mobile cranes were selected based on their ability to lift heavy loads and their maneuverability in tight spaces, which is a must for any project with a narrow footprint and difficult site logistics such as the 82nd Street Station. Once the construction of the platform has been finalized, workers will then install safety railings, overhead canopies, and windscreens for weather protection, and lighting followed by safety, electrical, and communications systems. To successfully execute this critical project, the team—including our client, the MTA, and subcontractors—collaborated to assess risks and develop detailed construction and safety plans. Given the high volume of pedestrian traffic, the safety plan called for the deployment of 16 flaggers at key locations in the surrounding areas to ensure public safety during active construction. The lift operations required precise engineering, while extensive outreach was conducted to inform local businesses of the upcoming activities. Additionally, OHLA USA coordinated with multiple agencies, including the New York City Department of Transportation and MTA Buses, to facilitate necessary street closures. The 82nd Street & Roosevelt Avenue Station is part of the Renewal of Five Stations project in Queens, NY, where state-of-good repair improvements are underway at five stations along the #7 Flushing Line.?The work focuses on reconstructing platforms and performing structural rehabilitation. #judlau #mtanyc #heavycivil #subway #liebherr #baycrane #gettingitdone #weekendwork #weareOHLA #webuildexcellence

I’m excited to have been part of the "Fast-Track to Success" event hosted by Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Liberty Northeast Region and STV. As one of the speakers, I had the privilege of sharing insights on how the #Design-Build method delivered the LIRR Elmont UBS Arena Station. It was exciting to take the time to reflect on this innovative project delivery approach that led to the efficient and timely completion of the station. Alongside Jason Dayboch, P.E. (Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction & Development and Long Island Rail Road) and Jim Farina, P.E. (OHLA USA), we explored how this project is setting a new standard for public infrastructure. The success of the LIRR Elmont Station truly highlights the power of Design-Build in action. It's exciting to see how this contracting methodology is transforming the way we approach complex infrastructure projects, delivering results that benefit our communities. A big thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in this discussion. Special thanks to Stephanie Infranco, Craig Covil and Camila Ryder for your dedication in organizing this #knowledgesharing event! Today, we honor and remember all those lost on that fateful day and pray for our first responders who continue to suffer from post-9/11 illnesses. We also take the time to reflect on the role the A/E/C community played in the recovery and rebuilding efforts. Numerous firms came to the aid of our first responders with PPE, construction equipment, and supplies and also responded when called upon by our local agencies to rebuild Lower Manhattan's infrastructure. We salute all those who worked tirelessly and resiliently to build back our beloved city. #OHLAUSA #Judlau #weremember #honor #firstresponders #support #rebuilding #recovery

The Morena Conveyance North Project Reaches an Important Milestone! #OHLAUSA’s Morena Conveyance North project in San Diego, CA recently hit an impressive milestone with the micro-tunneling machine breakthrough of the lower section of the Rose Creek Canyon tunnel.?This was immediately followed by the dismantling of the Herrenknecht micro-tunneling machine. Congratulations to the entire team on these major accomplishments! Up next:?work crews will begin constructing the jacking shaft for the upper section of the Rose Creek Canyon tunnel. ?? Protecting Southern California’s Water Supply ?? The Morena contract requires the installation of almost four miles (20,870 linear feet) of both 48-inch wastewater force main and 30-inch brine centrate pipelines. To house the piping, the OHLA USA team is performing the construction of a jack-and-bore tunnel that runs beneath San Clemente Canyon, Rose Canyon, and Interstate 805. The piping will transport wastewater to the North City Water Reclamation Plant where it will be treated to meet recycled water standards for uses other than drinking. ? The contract’s scope of work also calls for the installation of over four miles of a new Fiber Optic system as well as considerable civil improvements to city streets and walkways. ? Morena Conveyance North is one of many water infrastructure projects in OHLA’s portfolio that safeguard the environment and protect California’s precious water supply.

The construction sector faces unique challenges, and mental health can often take a backseat. But it doesn’t have to be this way. By coming together, we can make a difference and reduce the rising number of suicides in our industry. Here’s how we can take action: ?? Raise Awareness: Start conversations and break the stigma around mental health. Remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. ??Training & Education: Equip workers and leaders with the tools to recognize and support those at risk. A change in personality or changes in a coworker’s demeanor can indicate that they may be struggling. ??Accessible Resources: Provide easy access to counseling services and mental health resources on-site. Employee Assistance Programs can provide a wide range of services to support workers going through a crisis. ??Support Networks: Build strong communities where everyone looks out for each other. Create open communication channels so that everyone has a voice and feels connected to the team. ??Call, Text, or Chat: Dial 988 for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This important resource is available 24 hours a day. Languages spoken: English and Spanish. ??Connect with people you trust: reach out, contact a loved one, and don’t hesitate to express your feelings. ? Together, we can ensure that no one in our industry feels alone. Let’s prioritize mental well-being and create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone. ?? #MentalHealthMatters #ConstructionSafety #SuicidePrevention #SupportEachOther For more information: https://lnkd.in/g8HFRcge

Last week, the OHLA USA West Region team participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hamner Avenue Bridge & Widening project in Norco, California.?The event signifies that the newly constructed 1,200-foot-long, six-lane structure is now open to traffic. The new post-tensioned box-girder bridge features a structural, seismic, and hydraulic state-of-the-art design. The project not only encompassed the construction of the new bridge but also the widening of both southbound and northbound Hamner Avenue from two to six traffic lanes.?Additionally, the project team led by OHLA USA, carried out the demolition of the existing bridge structure and also reconstructed approach roadways and performed channel improvements, utility relocation, and retaining wall construction. Also included was the construction of ramps at the northeast and southeast ends of the bridge to connect to the regional Santa Ana River Trail. The new structure, which is located over the Santa Ana River, will ease congestion between the cities of Norco and Eastvale. Through autumn of this year, the project team will continue executing punch list items, such as the installation of bridge barrier railing and lighting, the construction of the multipurpose bridge trail connection to the Santa Ana River trail, and the completion of landscaping, irrigation systems, and erosion control. Originally built in 1939, the heavily used original bridge structure had two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with no median or shoulders. It paralleled Interstate 15 and was used as an alternate route through the area during traffic congestion, maintenance activities, or freeway emergencies. The original reinforced concrete bridge was approximately 676 feet long and 36 feet wide. The previous bridge was widened and seismically upgraded in 1978. The new bridge’s namesake honoree is former City of Norco Mayor Berwin Hanna. Mr. Hanna is dedicated to public service and public transportation improvements in the region.
