?? Big Moves on I-5! ?? Check out our amazing team in action! This week, #OHLAUSA met a major milestone:?workers installed a total of 30 84-foot-long girders along the I-5 Rye Canyon section!! This is just a small part of our mission to improve one of California’s busiest highways! Covering 17 miles between SR-14 and Parker Road, this LA Metro project will enhance travel with: ? New HOV lanes in both directions ? Northbound and southbound truck lanes to ease congestion ? Bridge reconstruction, barrier walls, advanced ITS tech, and much more We are proud to be transforming I-5 for smoother, safer travel—delivering progress one milestone at a time. The project is 65% complete and on track for substantial completion by July 2026. ?? The spectacular fall weather provided the perfect backdrop for OHLA USA Central Region’s Operations Manager, Pete Console, and Project Manager, Collin Quinn, to take Senior National Counsel, Virginia Trunkes, on a tour of three of our signature Tollway (I-294) contracts under construction by OHLA USA’s subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, Inc.?These are three of over 20 projects that Judlau has underway or has completed for client, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.? ? The first stop was in Cook County at the tollway contract that stretches from St. Charles Avenue to North Avenue.??Run by Project Manager, James Bratsos, this $113 million assignment is transforming a critical section of I-294 with activities resulting in roadway widening, bridge reconstruction, and installation of noise walls along with a collector-distributor roadway. Ginger saw firsthand the work involved in reconstructing two bridges over Union Pacific Railroad tracks – a major contract challenge as it requires extensive coordination with freight rail owners and other transportation agencies. ? The next stop took Ginger to Franklin Park to see the project that calls for widening and reconstructing I-294 from Grand Avenue to Wolf Road.?Managed by Alex Renn, this $153 million contract features two new flyover bridges that will connect I-294 to I-490.?Ginger appreciated learning about the challenges and innovative solutions behind constructing massive retaining walls, bridge piers, and 160-foot-long concrete girders! ? The tour wrapped up with time spent learning about Judlau’s construction work on 1.5 miles of I-294 from Flagg Creek to Hinsdale Oasis.?Overseen by Project Manager, Brian Groundwater, the job has seen significant progress this year with widening the interstate and constructing new exit and entrance ramps.?Ginger also witnessed the advances made with Judlau’s concrete placement using its own Gomaco machine, which will place 45,500 square yards of concrete by the time the project is completed. ? Teamwork at its best! The #OHLABuilding team gathered for a high-level planning meeting to organize and set the stage for the official kickoff of the $228 million design-build contract for the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) Master Plan Replacement Jail Site 1 Training and Treatment Center. This transformative project marks a significant step in MDCR’s mission to provide a modern, safe, and dignified environment for inmates and staff. Designed to foster rehabilitation, the facility will improve connections to family, legal resources, education, and healthcare services, taking a holistic approach to inmate care and support. Key features of this innovative facility include: ?? A 3-story, state-of-the-art Booking and Release Center with four courtrooms and dormitory-style holding cells ?? A 4-story administrative HQ for MDCR operations ?? A spacious column-free warehouse, energy-efficient central plant, and illuminated parking areas with a 500-vehicle garage We’re excited to bring this vision to life with our dedicated team! ? Building the Future! ??? We are thrilled to share highlights from The Moles Student Day at the Purple Line Light Rail project in Maryland! On Friday, November 1st, over 100 engineering students gathered for a day filled with incredible learning, valuable networking, and an insider's look at one of the region’s most transformative infrastructure projects. Hosted by Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS) and client representatives, the event kicked off with a comprehensive project overview and safety orientation. The day continued with a guided bus tour along the 16.2-mile alignment where the students explored key project components and learned about the complexities and challenges of designing and constructing the 21-station light rail system. The day’s highlights included presentations and detailed discussions on the scope of work and project innovations from leadership including Hugo Fontirroig and Alberto Pinacho and construction managers Julio Velez, Manuel Marino, and Scott Glass. Project representatives who shared their expertise and knowledge with the students at the various segment stops along the alignment include our Bethesda Shaft Lead, Alejandro Plaza; Bethesda Tunnel Engineer, Miguel Albornoz; Silver Spring Transit Center Lead, Kristina Espineli; and Stations Manager, Marco Gippone. Maryland Transit Solutions, the joint venture of Dragados USA and OHLA USA, is proud to lead the design and construction of the Purple Line Light Rail project. Once complete, the project will connect communities from Bethesda to New Carrollton, providing seamless transit access to Metro, MARC, and Amtrak, all while reducing 17,000 vehicle trips daily and supporting sustainable development! ?? ?? Congratulations, Nicolas Vintimilla! ?? We are excited to announce that Nicolas Vintimilla, Project Engineer at the Morena Conveyance North project and the Alvardo 2nd Pipeline contract, has officially earned his QSP certification, becoming a qualified Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan Practitioner (SWPPP)! ?? With this certification, Nicolas is now fully equipped to oversee and ensure compliance with the California State Water Resources Board (State Water Board). This includes performing regular site inspections and ensuring that construction activities follow the project-specific SWPPP requirements, helping to protect water quality at every step. Nicolas dedicated significant time to reviewing the relevant material in preparation for the exam, and his hard work has paid off. He encourages other engineers to also explore the environmental aspects of the work we perform since they are incredibly important to our sustainability efforts. Nicolas aspires to keep learning from his team and enhancing his skills through hands-on experiences. He feels that project collaboration creates opportunities to apply his knowledge and contribute effectively to his team. He has recently started his MBA and aims to complete it by next year.
