On this day in oilfield DECOMMISSIONING history, October 24th: October 24, 2017 - The North Sea witnessed the start of one of the largest decommissioning projects in its history with the Brent Delta topside removal. After more than 40 years of production, Shell began the process of dismantling the Brent field, a cornerstone of UK oil production. Using the Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel, the Brent Delta platform’s 24,000-ton topside was lifted in a single operation, marking a significant achievement in offshore decommissioning. This project set new standards for safety, efficiency, and environmental protection in the oil and gas decommissioning process. A groundbreaking moment in oilfield decommissioning!

This Week in Oilfield History: Key Events that Shaped the Industry October 15-21. 1. Discovery of Oil in the Persian Gulf - October 17, 1932 In the early 1930s, oil companies were exploring vast deserts in the Middle East, hoping to find rich reserves beneath the surface. On October 17, 1932, the Bahrain Petroleum Company struck oil at the Jebel Dukhan field in Bahrain. This discovery marked the first major oil find in the Persian Gulf, triggering further exploration in the region. Soon after, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other countries became key players in the global oil industry. 2. OPEC Announces First Oil Production Cuts - October 18, 1973 One of the most defining moments in modern oil history occurred on October 18, 1973. In response to the U.S. decision to resupply Israel during the Yom Kippur War, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced a production cut, followed by an embargo against the United States and other Western nations. The decision sent shockwaves through the global economy, sparking the 1973 oil crisis, a sharp increase in oil prices, and an urgent push for energy diversification and efficiency in many nations. 3. The First Offshore Oil Well – October 20, 1947 The idea of extracting oil from beneath the ocean floor was once considered science fiction. However, on October 20, 1947, the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries drilled the first commercial offshore oil well out of sight from land in the Gulf of Mexico. Known as the Kermac 16 well, this achievement pioneered offshore drilling, leading to the development of new technologies to tap into vast underwater reserves. Today, offshore platforms account for a significant portion of global oil production, especially in regions like the North Sea, Brazil, and the Gulf of Mexico. 4. Spindletop Oilfield Fires Back Up – October 19, 1902 The iconic Spindletop gusher in Beaumont, Texas, is widely regarded as the moment that launched the modern oil age. While the first major oil flow occurred in 1901, a significant secondary event took place on October 19, 1902, when Spindletop hit another high-flow point, reaffirming the area’s incredible resource potential. This second boom cemented Spindletop as a major oilfield and contributed to the rapid expansion of the Texas oil industry, which would soon see the rise of major oil companies like Gulf Oil and Texaco. 5. Deepwater Horizon Trial Begins – October 19, 2010 The catastrophic Deepwater Horizon spill of 2010 remains one of the darkest chapters in oil industry history. On October 19, 2010, just six months after the explosion that killed 11 workers and spilled millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, a federal trial began to determine responsibility for the disaster. The spill raised awareness about the environmental risks of deepwater drilling and spurred stricter regulations, leading to changes in safety standards and operational practices across the offshore oil industry.

On a recent project in the Gulf of Mexico, a customer needed to remove 3 cemented casing strings. We, very efficiently, made a precision cut with our abrasive cutting technology through 10-3/4”X16”X30” casing. We do this every day. If you have a similar project or even a much different scenario, please contact us to see if we can do the same for you. If you want the best, call the best; Offshore Technical Solutions. 985-879-3212
