The Office of Experiential Education hosted its inaugural ExEd Spaces Community of Practice event this past Oct. 10. This event was held in the Purdue Knowledge Lab, a space designed to provide Purdue students with creative tools such as sewing machines, a podcast booth, Cricut machines and more. During this event, Knowledge Lab Director Sarah Huber shared the history of the lab and led discussions on how the lab can be used within a teaching and learning context. We value our industry partners for bringing their expertise, insights, and real-world experiences into the CNE classroom. Representatives like Mike Runza and Maggie Frazier from Clark Construction Group play a vital role in our construction engineering program, helping us develop versatile engineers by combining high-quality education with direct access to industry leaders and successful alumni. Earlier this semester, Mike led the discussion in #Capstone about deliverables, expectations, and the focus areas for the review of their projects by stakeholders. I enjoyed having Maggie back on campus and?giving back to the classroom; recent alumni giving back is inspiring. Both Mike and Maggie also served as guest lecturers in ENGR 103, where Maggie challenged first-year engineering students to engage in problem-solving within the construction field. This provided valuable #ExperientialLearning. Additionally, Mike and Maggie participated in an #EYM, a meeting for first-year engineers who are still deciding on their engineering major, to share the opportunities available in construction engineering. They had a busy trip this semester as they had the chance to meet with The Little Hammers. When you first meet Melissa Gruver at Purdue University, you instantly know that she is a strong advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice at her core. Everything about Melissa, from her professional life to her personal life, is about advancing equity and justice. She has designed civic engagement programs at Purdue to teach students how to advocate for themselves, for others, and for causes they believe in. The impact Melissa has had on her students through this programming has changed not only her students’ lives but the lives of future generations.?
