We're dedicated to advancing innovative technologies and strategies to accelerate the decarbonization of the electric grid, ensuring a cleaner, more resilient energy future for all Americans. That's why the Office of Electricity, in partnership with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), intends to launch the $2.15 million #AmericanMade #DigitizingUtilitiesPrize in early 2025! This prize aims to connect utilities with teams transforming digital systems & data analytics in the energy sector. NREL is also seeking feedback and information on two topics: the prize focus areas and challenges specific to utilities or regulators in which outside entities are likely able to address. The prize will address decision-making under uncertainty, sensors and/or analytics testing, and validation of use cases utilizing public data for the rapid, reliable and resilient integration of distributed energy resources on to the electric grid. With rising demands and more frequent extreme weather events testing the U.S. power grid, OE and Clean Energy at ORNL are driving innovation through collaboration at the Powerline Conductor Accelerated Testing Facility.??? Here, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and industry partners like Prysmian are testing advanced conductor materials and coatings under real-world extremes–boosting power line capacity and efficiency without full-scale replacements. Recent tests of Prysmian's E3X coating show promise in increasing transmission capacity and cooling power lines, critical for a sustainable grid. Learn more about our joint efforts to modernize the grid ??
Robot-powered #powerline coating? ?? Check! ? As demand on the nation’s #electricgrid increases, Oak Ridge National Laboratory is helping companies to develop new ways to increase the capacity of existing power lines—without building hundreds of miles of new #transmission lines. Instead, companies can use the Powerline Conductor Accelerated Testing Facility, or PCAT, to?test?the durability of new coatings and?#conductors?in realistic outdoor conditions?and fine-tune new products for rapid commercialization. ? Recently, a multinational cable manufacturing company called Prysmian utilized PCAT for extended testing of a robot-applied coating called E3X to prove that the product would perform as effectively when applied as an upgrade to existing power lines. With grid demand expected to double within the next few years, sustainable energy storage solutions are more crucial than ever. Sodium-ion batteries, which use sodium instead of lithium, are now being explored as a promising option for large-scale energy storage to support the grid. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Electricity (OE), in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has championed this technology as a cost-effective, sustainable option for long-duration energy storage. Through OE’s strategic funding, the Sodium-ion Alliance for Grid Energy Storage (SAGES) has been launched, uniting five national laboratories, three universities, and multiple industry partners to advance sodium-ion batteries and support a reliable, resilient energy grid. SAGES aims to create safe, affordable sodium-ion batteries specifically for use on the grid. These efforts are supported by the new Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL) facility at PNNL, which brings together every stage of battery development—from initial materials research to full-scale testing.
