关于我们

Founded in 1924, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science is the oldest research institute at UNC-Chapel Hill. Our mission today is to foster groundbreaking social research that improves the lives of people in North Carolina and around the world. Odum expands Carolina’s impact by providing education and support for planning, implementing, and disseminating research. We work to advance rigorous and reproducible research across the data, social and health sciences, while building collaborative, trans-disciplinary research networks. Our staff provides a range of consulting services on quantitative and qualitative methods, GIS and spatial analysis, survey research and data management to the UNC community and beyond. We also offer a wide variety of short courses on research methods and other data science topics each year, and operate one of the premiere social science data archives in the world. The Odum Institute provides a unique combination of services and support to guide our users through the research life cycle effectively and efficiently.

UNC Research is advanced prosthetics. Read more about this research here: https://go.unc.edu/i4N8F Biomedical engineer Helen Huang and her lab are building better prosthetics by enhancing them with robotics and AI. Helen is a professor in the Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. The department is a transformative collaboration between NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill with a mission to unite engineering and medicine to improve lives. When Helen began doing this research in the 2000s, patients were still using 100-year-old technologies. But so much has changed since then. Her prosthetics connect to existing muscles above an amputation. The remaining nerves activate the muscles, which in turn control the prostheses. The process mimics how the nervous system signals and activates a biological limb. This research is life-changing for North Carolinians like Greg Phillips, an amputee who has participated in almost every one of Helen’s studies for lower limb prosthetics. Helen’s research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the largest funder of U.S. clinical trials. This funding supports vital research, helping the people of North Carolina and beyond. #UNCResearchIsNC #prosthetics #AI #technology #research .
