Ochsner Children’s is celebrating #ChildLifeMonth by wearing the colors of the rainbow and learning about the many ways child life specialists are valuable resources in the care of our patients. We kicked off the week in shades of orange and learned about the importance of ensuring children have developmentally appropriate toys while under our care. Even our pet therapy friend, Val, wore his orange scarf to bring awareness. ?? Did you know that prolonged hospitalizations increase a child’s risk for developmental delay? Delays can come in all shapes and sizes and can be physical, social, motor or cognitive. February 28 is Rare Disease Day! But did you know that rare diseases aren’t so rare at Ochsner Children’s? We're experts at caring for children with rare diseases! ?? Eighty percent of rare diseases have a genetic component and half effect children. And although rare diseases only impact about 300 million people worldwide, when you are impacted by a rare disease, it often impacts 100% of your daily life. Meet Andrew, an Ochsner Children’s patient who was diagnosed with a rare disease called Wolf-Hirshhorn syndrome (WHS). ?? Andrew is two years old and loves hanging out with his siblings. When he isn’t hanging with his family, Andrew can be found “working out” (going to his various therapies) with his therapy team at the Michael R. Boh Center for Child Development or getting a check-up at our Ochsner Children’s Pediatric Complex Care Clinic! Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is a rare genetic disorder where part of the fourth chromosome is missing. WHS impacts around 1 in 50,000 live births and is associated with a higher risk of mortality, heart defects, distinctive facial features, seizures, kidney failure, growth and developmental delays. Andrew is in great hands at Ochsner Children’s. He sees teams in complex care, neurology, cardiology, pediatric plastic surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, audiology, genetics, pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, ENT, immunology, gastroenterology, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. “We’re grateful for our care team and experience at Ochsner Children’s,” Hannah, Andrew's mother, said. “It’s truly been a good one. And Andrew’s team of doctors have become like family.” Although Andrew has a rare diagnosis of Wolf-Hirshhorn syndrome, we know him for his love of cuddles, strong will and amazing family. Meet Anna Liz, a true fighter whose story inspires us all. ?? Her incredible journey began even before she was born, when an abnormality was detected in her heart during a routine ultrasound by Shontell Thomas, MD, an OB/GYN at Ochsner Health Center – Kenner. From that moment, her family’s life was forever changed. Not long after, Anna Liz’s mother, Rafaela, met pediatric cardiologist Jessica Mouledoux, MD, and her team at Ochsner Children’s Hospital. Dr. Mouledoux explained the best approach to caring for Anna Liz once she was born. “I won’t deny it, I was scared,” Rafaela said. “My mind was flooded with countless thoughts. It was my first pregnancy, and I was suddenly faced with terms like “surgery,” “high-risk pregnancy,” and the greatest uncertainty of all: What would my baby’s arrival be like?” Guided by the compassionate care of Dr. Thomas, Dr. Mouledoux, and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Benjamin Peeler, MD, and their dedicated staff, Anna Liz underwent a series of life-saving procedures and treatments shortly after she was born on Sept. 25, 2023. “I was able to meet my little girl before they took her away to keep her under observation,” Rafaela said. “I heard her first cry, felt her tiny face against mine, and kissed her.” Despite fears and uncertainties, Rafaela found strength through unwavering faith and the support of skilled doctors and nurses who went above and beyond to ensure Anna Liz had the best chance at life. After a challenging yet hope-filled 41-day NICU stay, Anna Liz emerged as a symbol of resilience and was discharged. Rafaela would like to especially thank NICU nurse Grace Taffaro, RN, for her guidance, compassion and care during their time in the NICU. And although Rafaela feared navigating life at home, the team at Ochsner Children’s reassured her that she and Anna Liz would be okay, and they could get through this. “In that office, we found not just medical care but a new family,” Rafaela said. “Dr. Mouledoux, Dr. Megan, Jenna White, PA-C, Mia Lowe, PA-C, and Nurse Tracie each made our journey lighter and happier.” On March 21, 2023, Anna Liz underwent heart surgery performed by Dr. Peeler. It went perfectly. “I always say that I no longer admire superheroes from movies,” Rafaela said. “Because we met a real-life hero in Dr. Peeler and his fantastic team.” Today, Anna Liz is thriving. She's strong, smart, and full of joy! Her story is a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and expert medical care. And while she still has follow-up appointments and will need to monitor her heart throughout her life, her family knows that she’s in the best hands at Ochsner Children’s. ?? Meet Molly, a five-year-old pediatric patient born with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) who received life-saving surgery at Ochsner Children's Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, when she was just two weeks old. Katherine Lindle, MD, a pediatric cardiologist at Ochsner Lafayette General who cares for Molly, says she has zero restrictions and doesn't even need medication. We're so happy that Molly is thriving after her diagnosis of TOF and surgery with our team. Way to go, Molly! And way to go, Ochsner Children's pediatric cardiology team! ?? The halls of Ochsner Children's Hospital transformed into a Mardi Gras parade route on Wednesday, Feb. 26, thanks to the help of our Child Life team and Ochsner Children’s staff! The krewe paraded up and down the halls, playing music, dancing and handing out beads, stuffed animals, toys and goodies to our pediatric patients. The Krewe of Iris Captain Kristin D. and several of her riders joined in on the fun by parading up and down the halls with us, and so did our friends from Prescription Joy! Each patient even got a miniature king cake they can decorate themselves, thanks to the generous donation from Winn-Dixie, which made the day that much sweeter. Special thank you to our Child Life team who coordinated today’s event. Rivers C. appeared to be a typical newborn baby boy, but something unusual happened whenever he cried – his skin turned blue. After Rivers’ pediatrician witnessed a blue spell herself, she urged the family to visit an emergency room nearby, where Rivers ended up being intubated and given medication to keep him alive. Shortly after arriving at the ER, a pediatric cardiologist urgently referred the family to Ochsner Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. “The doctor gave us two options for hospital in New Orleans, and I said I’d go to whichever one was best,” Candace said. “He told us Ochsner.” Because of the severity of Rivers’ case, he was airlifted from Lafayette to Ochsner Children’s Hospital in New Orleans through Ochsner Flight Care where he could receive immediate care and fast transportation. “I absolutely love Mrs. Erin and Mr. Vinnie with the flight team,” Candace said. “My family and I honestly believe if it wasn’t for them, Rivers wouldn’t have made it.” When they arrived at Ochsner Children’s Hospital, Rivers was stabilized by the team of nurses, pediatric cardiologists and pediatric cardiac ICU physicians and received a diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Dennis Wells, MD, a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, saw him and made plans for an urgent surgical repair. “Dr. Wells saved our baby,” Candace said. “He came in the day we got to the hospital and explained everything to us and what we needed to do." Rivers underwent a tetralogy of Fallot repair surgery performed by Dr. Wells. Rivers did well, and was soon able to go home. Candace was amazed at how quickly the team at Ochsner Children’s Hospital handled Rivers’ situation and was impressed that they knew exactly what to do. “Rivers’ was incredibly sick, and the team at the outside emergency room, our flight care team, and our ICU team including the nurses, intensivists and cardiologists did a fantastic job stabilizing him upon arrival and preparing him for surgery," Dr. Wells said. Today, Rivers is a happy, healthy little boy who is talking, smiling and playing. Aaccording to his mother, it’s as if Ochsner Children’s gave them a brand-new baby. ?? “Ochsner Children's never gave up on Rivers,” Candace said. “The doctors, nurses and staff were always working together and always on top of it. They really made us feel like they cared – and they did. We would not go to any other hospital for our son than Ochsner Children’s Hospital.” Rivers, we love you! And we’re so proud of how far you’ve come. We had a very special guest visit our patients, families and staff on Valentine's Day! Meet Renny, a Budweiser Clydesdale! ?? Renny, the 8-year-old Clydesdale, was a wonderful guest who put smiles on everyone's faces and was the perfect little (or shall we say big) Valentine. ???? Thank you so much to the Budweiser Clydesdales for visiting us at Ochsner Health and Ochsner Children's! We can't wait to wave to Renny and his friends as they walk in parades this Mardi Gras season!
