We asked some of our OCFA firefighters and professional staff to share the first word that comes to mind when they think of Thanksgiving. Their answers? Words like family, gratitude, football, and food. For many of our firefighters, Thanksgiving is spent away from home, serving our community. While they’re at the firehouse or responding to calls, they’re still connected by a shared sense of family—amongst their crew and the people they serve. What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Let us know in the comments! From all of us at OCFA, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

“Without more research into the biological, chemical, and social aspects of carcinogens, firefighters will continue to face elevated incidences of cancer. We’re proud to partner with the UC to support research that helps address this issue and save lives." - Chief Brian Fennessy
UC has awarded nearly $6 million in state funding to advance research aimed at reducing cancer and cancer risk among firefighters through the California Firefighter Cancer Prevention and Research Program https://bit.ly/3AFhvRL

Do you know which bin to put your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, or fire extinguisher in? To keep your family and home safe, replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every 10 years. Check the back of the alarm, or the manufacturer’s guide, to see if it contains radioactive materials. If it does not, the battery goes to OC Household Hazardous Waste and the rest of the alarm goes in the trash. If it does contain radioactive material, take the entire alarm to OC Household Hazardous Waste. Used or expired fire extinguishers ?? go to OC Household Hazardous Waste.
