One day my son, who is neurodivergent, came home from school and off handedly said “I don’t even care about the chart anymore, I’m never going to make it to the top.” I’ll never forgot how sad I was for him that day. I knew that the expectations were just too high for him. He simply didn’t have the skills in place that would have enabled him to be recognized as one of the “good” kids based on the rules of that class. His teachers weren’t terrible people, but they also didn’t understand how a system like this that didn’t account for any individualized standards was hurting my son and probably other students like him in the class. We need better training for all teachers on behavior management that is both effective and inclusive and we need the major culture shift in education as a whole towards teaching students prosocial and adaptive skills rather than trying to punish the bad behaviors out of them. My son is one of the driving forces in my mission to improve the quality of public schools for all kids who need compassion and support. #compassion #publicschools #bcba #inclusiveeducation #aba
