An Ocean Testbed Co-created to Synchronize and Evolve Technology Solutions for Industry, Ocean Science, and Conservation
关于我们
MBARI houses an effort called Synchro, which utilizes the Monterey Bay and areas in the Pacific Northwest as a technology testbed- where emerging tech can be tested and evaluated in facilities or at-sea for free by potential users. Another track include a collaborative pilot study design involving emerging tech and various marine groups to tell a story on what could be used to monitor potential offshore wind impacts. Our third track purchases and evaluates cost-effective tech to give valuable feedback to the developer and disseminate gear to a broader range of users. Synchro aims to bridge the gap between R&D innovation and widespread adoption of ocean technology by involving the technology users from the outset. "SYNCHRO"nizing technology testing in real-world conditions and user engagement helps accelerate the adoption of essential tools for observing an ever-changing ocean. The project is supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Oceankind, and Schmidt Technology Marine Partners.

For those who missed it, we made it easy for you to hear from SEATREC's Yi Chao about their autonomous float, how it differs from the famous Argo floats found throughout the world's ocean, and how it's powered by energy harvested by changes in ocean temperatures. https://lnkd.in/gj2398Zu
?? Dive into Innovation with SEATREC! ?? Join us on August 7 at 11am (PST) for another 30-minute webinar in our Show and Tell Series featuring Seatrec's groundbreaking infiniTE? Float. Discover how this first-of-its-kind platform generates clean, renewable energy to power subsea robots, solving power limitations and revolutionizing ocean data collection. ?? Learn how Seatrec's technology harnesses temperature differences in ocean waters to fuel deepwater research equipment, making it scalable and cost-effective. ?? Learn how this float can aid in hurricane forecasting, marine mammal research, and domestic threat monitoring with up to 4 profiles a day and the ability to support a range of sensors. Register and get the chance to ask questions or bring your thoughts to the development team ! ?? https://shorturl.at/eAcjr

Our friends across the pond who we are working with are also looking for cost-effective marine technology and ready to invest €250,000. Their call ends next week on July 15th, so don't wait too late to apply!
?? ?? Opportunity Alert! We are buying cost-effective marine technology! ?? Apply by the 15th of July 2024 ?? LandSeaLot is investing €250,000 in cost-effective marine technologies to enhance ocean observation, management, and decision-making solutions. ?? If you have a suitable solution, please fill out the submission form available on our website: https://lnkd.in/eKqyGcYD and send it to [email protected] What is cost-effective marine technology? ?? Tech with substantially lower costs than referenced, conventionally used products with the same or similar functionality. ?? Tools, devices or systems designed, developed and priced to be affordable and accessible to a wide range of users. What are the technologies considered?? ? Platforms, sensors and samplers. ?Ongoing recurrent costs for use such as maintenance, calibration and work needed to produce useful data.? ?Technology ready in the volumes quoted at the outset, or ready for manufacturing, pending LandSeaLot’s procurement.? ?Innovations targeting all fields: physics, biogeochemistry, chemistry, biology ?All stages of readiness level, however priority will be given to technology with readiness levels from Technology Validated in Lab (TR 4) to Actual System Proven in Operational Environment (TRL 9), but not yet in broad use. Starting off our bite-size webinar series, which are designed to connect emerging ocean tech with its potential users, was Suburban Marine with their Luma360 system. This integrated system is designed to monitor marine spaces as a smaller mobile unit that has a long range camera, radar, and AIS notes with data analytics to give a cohesive picture of an entire area- such as along the coast or within a marine protected area. A variety of users need a marine domain awareness system- from those who monitor marine mammals to those interested in auditing carbon credits; webinar attendees alone ranged from science, engineering, government, data analysis, and port security. The first 15 minutes are about the technology and last 15 minutes answer attendee questions. Stay tuned for more of these short intros to emerging technology on our new YouTube channel! #AIS #marinedomainawareness #marinemonitoring #marineprotection https://lnkd.in/gXQRU9_J

A few weeks back, Synchro returned from the UN Ocean Decade in Barcelona, where we sat on a few technology panels, exhibited a poster, witnessed the hand-off of Nature's Baton to the deep-ocean, met with our partners and funders (and many new folks for Synchro), and sampled some fine Spanish libations and cuisine. The variety of talks, peoples, languages, and exciting topics forced hard decisions on how to split one's time on top of visiting the many ocean installations throughout the city. Some of the bigger messages included: you can't work on some of these ocean problems if we as neighboring countries don't get along (a typhoon knows no country border), and that UN actions and goals truly can't be realized without some large-scale human behavioral change, which in itself is a challenge; social science will be necessary. It was great to listen to a variety of voices and how science and respect can be worked into ocean solutions, plus witness cool ocean art woven into the conference to "smooth out the harder edges of science".

Synchro's week at Oceanology International gave Amy West and Collin Closek a chance to present on the value and importance of supporting and using accessible marine technology. A strong contrast in price to some of the technology we saw on the floor, but theres's such a need for this technology in the ocean observing world. Thanks to all the organizers at Jerico and the the European Ocean Observing System. It was nice to see many of the businesses "in the flesh" who have reached out to us or are in our network. Though dreary London weather, it did not stop us from getting in the sights- some just out our front door where ancient buildings kissed modern ones. https://lnkd.in/gBAWF4fC
