With 40 vintages of winemaking between us, you’d think we’d seen it all—yet the pursuit of luxury non-alcoholic wine is an entirely new frontier. As I head to the winery next week to work on our 2024 vintage with Rob Fischer—now Oceano’s winemaker and Director of Winemaking Operations at Marine Layer and Valkyrie Selections—at our new home in Healdsburg, I’m reflecting on the exciting changes we made last year. We now operate as a “winery within a winery” at Marine Layer, whose boutique facility and commitment to craftsmanship make it the ideal home for Oceano Wines | Oceano Zero as we continue to spearhead the luxury non-alcoholic wine category. We’re honored to be part of the Marine Layer family, and I’m thrilled to have Rob guiding Oceano Wines to its fullest potential. Rob and I will be finalizing our 2024 vintage of Oceano Zero Chardonnay, sourced from Spanish Springs Vineyard. We’ve been working with the vineyard team since Oceano’s inception nine years ago. Right now, the wine has just completed malolactic fermentation—perfect timing for our trials. We will remove the alcohol from 9 liters, yielding 4.5 liters of alcohol-removed Chardonnay (that's right!), which we’ll refine through trials to achieve the ideal balance. The official release date is set for June 1st! On the same day, we’ll begin preliminary trials with a new alcohol removal partner for our Pinot Noirs. We’re exploring an innovative alcohol removal method that prioritizes aroma recovery and complexity, ensuring our wines retain their true vineyard expression. In addition to our Spanish Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir, we’re now working with a legendary vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. This vineyard is a game-changer for us—its strong coastal influence aligns perfectly with our brand’s identity, producing some of the most expressive Pinot Noirs out there. We can’t wait to bring that to our customers. While Rob has worked with over 30 varieties and made over 20 vintages of wine, this is his first foray into alcohol-removed winemaking—a challenge he’s embracing with humble enthusiasm and expertise. Every vintage presents a new opportunity, but crafting non-alcoholic wines at this level demands a new way of thinking. It’s a truly exciting time, and I’m honored to explore the limitless possibilities of non-alcoholic winemaking together. #OceanoZero #NonAlcoholicWine #LuxuryWine #Chardonnay #PinotNoir #Winemaking #PetalumaGap #SpanishSpringsVineyard #Innovation
