Ocean Conservancy extends our heartfelt condolences to the Leggett family on the passing of our friend, a lifelong champion of the Chesapeake Bay and founder and president of The Blacks of the Chesapeake, Vincent Leggett. Vince, who came from East Baltimore, is known by many titles: Admiral of the Chesapeake; historian; advocate; friend; and leader. He was a truly remarkable man whose life and work were a testament to the power of purpose, advocacy and love for both his community and the waters he called home. At the heart of his philosophy is prioritizing community engagement in conservation. His beliefs shed light on environmental responsibilities not existing in isolation—environmental protection thrives when local communities come together to advocate for sustainable practices, educate future generations and actively participate in restoration projects. We are honored to have worked alongside Vince and consider him a friend. Vince’s storytelling connected the importance of the history AND present of the Chesapeake Bay and our ocean. Vince's legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Chesapeake Bay, and it will live on in the stories told by those whose lives he touched. We celebrate a life well-lived, a life that inspires and a life that will continue to guide us. His spirit will live on in the Bay in the stories of the students he taught and in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest well, Vince, for your work is far from done. . #BlacksOfTheChesapeake #ChesapeakeBay

Friends of the Ocean and Climate, a network of like-minded countries advancing #OceanClimateAction at the UN Climate Change conference, released a joint statement at the close #COP29: https://lnkd.in/eUXjHz9d Among other things, “it reaffirms [the countries’] steadfast commitment to promoting the ocean-climate nexus at the UN Climate Change Conferences and utilizing sustainable ocean-based mitigation and adaptation actions that protect the integrity of all ecosystems in accordance with the best available science.” Ocean Conservancy is proud to support this group of ocean-climate champions as Secretariat. Their statement reaffirms the need for sustainable ocean-based climate solutions and climate finance to implement them. The statement is endorsed by 72 countries and the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change. It was delivered at the closing plenary by Dr. Sivendra Michael, Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. WATCH??

I arrived home from Baku last night but haven't stopped following the overtime discussions at #COP29. As the conference closes, these are my thoughts on the outcome, which fails to meet the urgency of the moment. When I left my 4-year-old for two weeks in Azerbaijan, I told her I would work to make sure that we protected our planet for her and other kiddos. I feel like I have failed her, but failure is not an option. We must demand more. #demandmore #climateaction #climatefinance #oceanclimateaction #LDCs #SIDS #fossilfuelphaseout

?? If we are going to end plastic pollution, we need a strong, impactful global plastics treaty. At Ocean Conservancy, we want to see an ambitious, comprehensive treaty that addresses the full life cycle of plastics to tackle plastic pollution and holds plastic producers accountable. As INC-5 begins next week, we urge negotiators to meet this crisis with the urgency it demands. The science is clear: Without bold action, plastic pollution is going to get significantly worse. To safeguard human health and food security and protect the environment that we depend on for life, we need a strong and ambitious treaty. More from our own Nicholas Mallos. ?? https://bit.ly/3CC30Pg

While Ocean Conservancy staff was at UN Biodiversity #COP16Cali (CBD COP16) in October, we brought together marine policy experts, scientists and conservationists to discuss the importance of the Ocean Twilight Zone and the need for international cooperation to better understand and safeguard this important area. While the ocean is impacted by our changing climate, it is also the home of numerous climate solutions, like clean ocean energy, that can power a responsible, rapid and just transition away from polluting fossil fuels. You may not be here in Azerbaijan, but you can help us show leaders that the world is looking to them to support these lasting solutions to the climate crisis. . . #COP #COP29 #OceanClimateAction #CleanOceanEnergy Shamini Selvaratnam

Alarming but true: A recent U.S. Energy Information Administration report found that the U.S. has produced more crude oil than any country *ever* — with no signs of slowing down. This oil production has harmed our ocean and fueled the climate crisis, posing an ever-growing threat to life on our planet. ? For years, oil companies have profited from devastating our environment and left us with the bill. At #COP29, Ocean Conservancy is advocating for policies that hold oil producers accountable. Join us and take action: Tell Big Oil it’s time to clean up their mess! ???? https://bit.ly/3Z17dVf
