?? The U.S. fishing industry is facing serious disruption. Regulatory freezes and firings at NOAA Fisheries are compounding existing challenges like overfishing and could cause delays in reopening of key fisheries, such as the Northeast groundfish fishery. These disruptions impact coastal economies, food security and livelihoods across the nation and threaten the health of marine ecosystems. Thirty-six years ago, the oil tanker #ExxonValdez ran aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, triggering one of the worst environmental disasters in history.? Time and time again, we’ve seen the toll of oil spills—loss of wildlife, damage to marine ecosystems and harm to human health. The impacts of oil disasters will continue to be felt for years to come unless we act. Take action and urge Congress to prevent future oil spills like Exxon Valdez.??? ??? Deep-sea mining will devastate sensitive and remote deep-ocean habitats filled with some of the planet’s most unique life. We must act quickly to ensure our ocean is protected. Now is the time to urge policy makers, industry leaders and ocean lovers to call for a moratorium and #StoptheMachines.
Among the biological riches of the seabed are minerals like copper, cobalt, nickel and manganese. Their potential industrial value has sparked interest in deep-sea mining, a highly speculative industry that threatens this fragile and largely unexplored world. The deep sea is the largest ecosystem on Earth, crucial for carbon sequestration, global food chains, and home to extraordinary biodiversity. Yet, only a fraction has been studied. Scientists are just beginning to understand its role in sustaining our planet and yet it faces unprecedented threats from emerging industries that could alter it forever. Our new video captures the voices of leading scientists at the Deep Sea Biology Symposium in Hong Kong stressing one urgent message: We need more deep-sea research before irreversible damage occurs. #DefendTheDeep Olívia Pereira, Jaime-Leigh Lue Chin, Dr. Diva Amon, Qian Pei-Yuan, Alycia Smith, Dr. Lisa Levin, Michelle Taylor, Kyle Foster, Kerry Howell

?? For Alaska Native Peoples, food is more than just a meal—it is identity, history and connection to the land and waters. Traditional food practices encompass how food is gathered, stored, prepared and shared. These practices sustain not only people but entire ecosystems, reinforcing the deep reciprocity between humans and the natural world. Yet, today’s systems of managing lands, waters and wildlife often fail to acknowledge these relationships. Conservation and resource management policies frequently focus on ecology and economics, but what about sustainability? ? What does it mean when a community is fed but its heart is still hungry? ? How can policy better reflect sustainability alongside environmental protection? ? Why does prioritizing Indigenous food sovereignty strengthen conservation for everyone? In a recently published essay, Ocean Conservancy staff worked alongside Alaska Native authors and researchers to explore the inherent connection between culture and conservation. ??
