Underwater Photographer of the Year competition winners revealed The Underwater Photographer of the Year competition celebrates photography beneath the surface of the ocean, lakes, rivers and even swimming pools, and attracts entries from around the globe. There are thirteen categories with themes such as macro, wide angle, and wreck photography. Spanish photographer?Alvaro Herrero?was named?Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025, whose photograph “Radiant Bond” shows the special relationship between a mother humpback whale and her newborn calf. Scientists urge UK government to ban bottom-trawl fishing in marine protected areas A group of twenty scientists have written to the Secretary of State, Steve Reed MP, to urge the UK government to ban the use of bottom-towed fishing gear within marine protected areas (MPAs) on a whole-site basis. UK government creating pathway for more offshore wind projects The UK government is creating a pathway for more offshore wind projects as it launched a consultation on proposed reforms to the upcoming Allocation Round 7 (AR7) Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction. The CfD scheme is the government’s main mechanism for supporting low-carbon electricity generation, incentivising investment in renewable energy by protecting developers from volatile wholesale prices. UK-EU disagree on “best available scientific evidence” in sandeel case A tribunal under the post-Brexit Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) met at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague from 28 to 30 January 2025. Recently submitted papers since the hearing reveal a disagreement between the parties on what constitutes ‘best available scientific evidence’, a key point which could influence the decision of the Court. Researchers to ‘listen’ to UK coastal cities through underground networks Researchers from the?National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the University of Southampton will ‘listen’ to a UK city for the first time at scale through its network of optical fibre cables using a ground-breaking new technology. The researchers will be using a technique called distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to capture sounds and vibrations throughout London and Southampton’s underground optical fibre networks.
