关于我们
The Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programme is a UN Ocean Decade endorsed programme building on the work of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) and the broad ocean acidification community. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal Target 14.3, OARS is dedicated to minimising and addressing the impacts of Ocean Acidification (OA) through enhanced cooperation at all levels. We are creating a network of scientists and other ocean professionals to provide systematic evidence of how ocean acidification is changing the chemistry of our oceans, how these changes impact the sustainability of marine ecosystems, and use this knowledge to underpin better management of marine resources. Through our efforts, we aim to foster collaboration and capacity-building and bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical applications. OARS is committed to effective communication. We ensure that scientific findings in ocean acidification science are readily available to policy makers and communities, empowering them with the information needed to make informed decisions regarding mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Scientists warn the “clock is ticking” to tackle #oceanacidification. Prof Steve Widdicombe from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) & the Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programme says, “With rising acidity, [these] once vibrant ecosystems are now slowly disintegrating,”. https://lnkd.in/em54U_nq Economist Impact #COP16 #biodiversityloss #ocean

?? OARS is proud to be featured in the new UN Ocean Decade report. Find us on page 15! Our seven working groups set out to provide guidance and support to stakeholders around the world on how to reduce the impacts of ocean acidification. OARS is working on identifying the data and evidence needs for both local and global mitigation and adaptation strategies. We then communicate these to the scientific and science policy community to take support science based action. Please get in touch to find out more. #COP16 The OARS programme is co-lead by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) - Stephen Widdicombe UNESCO Ocean - Kirsten Isensee University of Washington - Jan Newton
Just launched at #COP16Colombia: our new report 'An Ocean of Life' outlines how ocean science protects marine biodiversity. ?????? This new publication features 19 success stories from partners across the world with concrete examples of how the #OceanDecade community of scientists is delivering the science we need for the ocean we want. From providing scientific inputs to the European Union Nature Restoration Law to using acoustic technology to protect endangered right whales, leading the first-ever marine invasive species survey in Fiji, and supporting efforts to reduce the impacts of ocean acidification on marine life globally, dive in the report for stories of hope and action for the ocean! ?? ?? As the world comes together for #COP16, it’s clear that more attention is needed to tackle ocean acidification—one of the most urgent threats to marine biodiversity. Target 8 of the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework calls for actions to “Minimise the impact of climate change and ocean acidification on biodiversity and increase its resilience through mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction actions, including through nature-based solution and/or ecosystem-based approaches, while minimising negative and fostering positive impacts of climate action on biodiversity.”. However, although some national and regional governments have started implementing the necessary measures, only 13 government-level ocean acidification action plans are in place, according to the OA Alliance (International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification).? Now is the time for stronger global action. The OARS programme, endorsed by the #UNOceanDecade, connects a global network of ocean acidification scientists and practitioners to support the implementation of Target 8 through science-based, local and global mitigation and adaptation strategies.? Our experts from science, law and policy have developed key insights and guidance on Targets 7 and 8 with a focus on ocean acidification in a new policy brief for CBD COP16, available online: https://lnkd.in/g2RqP4hJ We welcome you to reach out to discuss how we can collaborate to protect our ocean. #BackToBlue #oceanacidification #COP16 #Cali #biodiversityloss #biodiversity #ocean #oceanhealth #COP16Colombia #OARS #CBDCOP16 ?#OARSOutcome7 UNESCO Ocean Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) University of Washington IISER KOLKATA #OAAlliance

?? Today marks the start of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), where delegates from over 190 countries will unite to tackle the urgent issue of biodiversity loss. Professor Stephen Widdicombe highlights the critical need to advance research on ocean acidification and biodiversity loss: “Further data is essential to justify the urgent interventions needed to prevent irreversible damage. We must move beyond controlled lab studies to global, field-based research.” Successfully documenting the causality between ocean acidification and species decline will generate the urgency needed to force policy makers to act. Want to know more about ocean acidification and biodiversity loss? ?? Ocean acidification and biodiversity loss: Connecting the dots with data?is a report written by Economist Impact for Back to Blue, an initiative of Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation. The purpose of this report is to highlight the need for ocean scientists to prove causal links between ocean acidification (OA) and damage to marine species, and the challenges involved in doing so Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eKbGymiC #BackToBlue #oceanacidification #COP16 #Cali #biodiversityloss #biodiversity #oceans #oceanhealth #PlymouthMarineLaboratory #COP16Colombia #OARS #CBDCOP16 Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML)?
