Thanksgiving is around the corner—let’s give back! As we prepare for a season of gratitude, let’s remember those who need our help most. There are many ways to make a difference right here in Orange County! Here’s how you can get involved: - Donate to Local Food Banks: Organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County and OC Food Bank provide essential support to families in need. Your donations help ensure that no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving. - Volunteer at Food Drives: Many local charities are hosting food drives leading up to Thanksgiving. Places like the Irvine Senior Services food drive help provide meals for seniors in need. Your time and energy will make a real impact. - Participate in Charity Turkey Trots: Lace up your running shoes for a good cause! Join the Dana Point Turkey Trot, which partners with local charities to raise funds for food programs and community services. You can run, walk, or even volunteer to help out! Many families are facing food insecurity, and the holidays can be especially tough. This is the season to share our blessings and make sure everyone is cheerful during the holidays, it’s never too early to help! Visit websites like www.feedoc.org, https://lnkd.in/gb7edYfm to learn more about these opportunities and sign up for events. You can help make a difference! Let’s make this holiday season a time of giving and unity. #GiveBack #ThanksgivingSpirit Post Creator: OCH Intern Elena Ramirez Sources: (listed in post) Photo Credit: https://www.mymcmedia.org/

Happy National Take A Hike Day!! ?????? Today, we celebrate the joys and challenges of getting out into nature and taking a hike. Every November 17th marks national take a hike day. Taking hikes is a great way to get into nature. Researching native species around the area you live in and going out to spot them can make hiking all the more exciting. Remember to gather the right supplies! Water and hiking shoes not only make the trip more comfortable but also safer. If you’re here in Southern California, be aware of the following three: - Mountain Lions: If you ever encounter one, experts say to appear big and face them! Make a lot of noise if they approach. - Coyotes: Experts say to follow the same protocol as mountain lions. - Snakes: start stomping your feet to create vibrations in the ground and wait until they move. Never approach them. Though it might feel strange to fight the urge to run, mountain lions and coyotes use this signal from other animals to recognize prey. So stand your ground, big and loud until they go away. The United States has over 60,000 miles of hiking trails so make use of them! Comment with your favorite hike! Today is National Recycle Day! National Recycle Day is all about raising awareness about the importance of recycling and how small actions can create a big difference. By recycling, we help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and minimize pollution. It’s a simple step that can make a world of difference! Every year on November 15th, National Recycle Day reminds us to prioritize recycling as part of our daily routine. Whether you’re at home, work, or school, recycling is something anyone can do at any time. Across the world, recycling initiatives are making an impact. Look for local recycling programs, drop-off centers, and curbside pickup in your area. Recycling reduces waste in landfills, conserves energy, and helps prevent harmful chemicals from entering our environment. It’s also a key action in combating climate change. Take the first step! Start by sorting your recyclables (paper, plastic, glass, metal) correctly and check with local programs for guidelines. Look for eco-friendly alternatives and educate others to make a greater impact. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener future! Let’s celebrate this holiday and recycle today for a better tomorrow! #NationalRecycleDay #GoGreen #ReduceReuseRecycle Post Creator: Elena Ramirez OCH Intern Sources: EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), National Recycling Coalition Photo Credit: https://lnkd.in/g9EwQRAF (Betka82 via Vectorstock)

Last Saturday, OCH provided our Nature Awareness Program to Daisies and Brownies Girl Scouts at Turtle Rock Nature Center. We had a great time talking about Nature, Leave No Trace, and Fire Safety and putting those lessons into practice during a short hike. The girls also earned their Eco Learner and Eco Friend badges, making it a rewarding experience for their work and engagement! Interested in organizing a Nature Awareness Program for your troop? ?? NEW BLOG ?? There are hundreds of reptiles that can be found all over the world, but there is one that seems to always strike fear into people, and that is snakes! While it is reasonable to have a fear of snakes, most of them are non-venomous and almost all of them keep to themselves and are more afraid of us than we are of them. Plenty of snakes can be found in California, but there are actually two invasive species of snakes that have found a home in the golden state and have been documented by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
