What are the "bad guys" of electromagnetism? - Air Gap - any space between the workpiece and top plate. This can be caused by parts that are not dead flat or close to flat as well as odd part shape, among other reasons - Material - not all alloys have the same magnetic potential - Water - electricity and water never work well together. Introducing water-like substances to an electromagnet will short circuit the magnet. The design of an electromagnetic chuck is important for this reason. Higher quality designs mean more of a watertight seal. Let's talk top plates... The top plate is the surface on which a workpiece sits on a magnetic chuck. Over time, the top plate wears down through normal usage but typically will last decades before needing to be addressed depending on the design and quality of the magnet. Once the top plate starts getting to a certain thickness, which varies depending on manufacturer of the chuck, a user can find a variety of problems can occur including loss of magnetism, bolts starting to stick through the top plate, and exposure of the coils to coolant and other contaminants. But in most instances the chuck is expected to hold almost an unlimited range of parts to be processed on the host machine.
