We're honored to have been awarded with a “Top Donor” Award from SeaShare for donating 20 million servings of seafood over the past 30 years! OBI Seafoods was presented this award at the Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in Boston earlier this month.

To close out Women's History Month, we are spotlighting Lorraine Brant from Arlington, WA. Lorraine began working for Naknek in February 2014, prior to the creation of OBI, for Ocean Beauty. She was introduced to the industry via her previous job, Health Force, which worked with various companies in the industry. Through them she visited various Alaskan vessels and plants. “Working with a lot of different company vessel managers, crewmembers and shore-based employees captivated me and I knew that this was where I wanted my career to go,” states Lorraine. So she left her job and applied for Office Manager in Naknek, where she has stayed till this day. So far, Lorraine has really enjoyed talking to the employees and fisherman. “In Naknek, it is not just a job, it is a family and when we meet up each summer there is so much excitement in the air.” She admires the people she works with, highlighting their dedication, drive, respect and loyalty. She also loves being a part of producing fish, as it is “exciting and rewarding” knowing that the product is shipped not just within the country, but all over the world. Setting up her home life to be away for 3 months, saying goodbye to family and grandkids, it can all be a challenge every year. “On the positive side, you get to see your Naknek family, and you know that at the end of the summer you will have to say goodbye to them until next year.” When not in Naknek, Lorraine can be found in OBI’s Arlington offices, helping make sure that things run smoothly as freight ships from and to our Alaska facilities. Aside from working, Lorraine can usually be found gardening, remodeling her home, or taking care of her mother or grandkids. She enjoys kite flying, walks on the beach, and video games. Let’s not forget her fish tank, which she is quite passionate about! She also loves seafood, “Basically, if it is seafood, I am going to try it.” To prospective employees Lorraine says,” My advice would be to come and give it a try. Concentrate on keeping your head in the game and be willing to learn any position put in front of you. Every step you take in this life will lead you to where you are supposed to be.” #obiseafoods

To celebrate Women’s History month, we want you to meet a woman who exemplifies the rich history of women driving the Wild Alaskan Seafood industry. This January, Vicki Curtiss celebrated her 50th anniversary with the company. Vicki’s involvement with fisheries in Petersburg, AK is rooted deep in her family- and the town’s- history. Her paternal grandmother ran her own shrimp boat and salmon tender in the mid 1900’s- absolutely groundbreaking and one of the first women to do so in her time! In the 1930’s her grandfather leased and operated what is now the current OBI Petersburg cannery and owned another cannery in Scow Bay. Her father was a commercial fisherman and her mother was the bookkeeper for Petersburg Cold Storage- which is now the current OBI Petersburg cold storage and processing facility! Born and raised in Petersburg, Vicki started working in the egg room at a local cannery when she was 14 years old. 50 years ago- she was hired to help with gillnet fish tickets in the same office she now manages today! Her mother became the office manager for the facility a couple years later and helped pave the way for Vicki, and women everywhere. Vicki had challenges such as having newborns at work with her during the busy summer seasons. Learning how to prioritize the work load and balancing a young family during peak salmon season is a feat not many can attest to, even today! Looking back at all her years, her most enjoyable part of the job is paying the fisherman their hard-earned money. Anyone who has worked with Vicki understands she will fight for what you deserve and takes pride in her work every day. Commenting on her time in the role, she is blessed to have observed conflict resolution from the early years with Petersburg Fisheries under Robert Thorstensen and Tom Thompson. Vicki stated, “It was pretty amazing listening and watching them resolve every situation and conflict they were presented with to everybody’s satisfaction. I admire and envy that in leaders”. Her best advice for those considering or starting their career with OBI? “Jump in with determination to do the best you can, offer to help in other areas, and be willing to do the most menial jobs if help is needed.” Today, outside of being the tenured PSG Office Manager, she loves long walks on the local boardwalks and trails- all the while waiting for the coveted winter white king salmon to return – her favorite seafood! #OBILife #alaska #seafood #wildsalmon #work #motivation
