First off, should we bring back the Parking Violation tickets? KIDDING?? *Deep breath* Let’s continue… Who took the 10-hour entrance exam as part of your application process to Oberg? ???? Once hired at Oberg, there were expectations on how you’d show up to work every day. Not only did you need to park correctly but… ?Shoe scrubbers were at the entrance for you to clean off your shoes before entering the building every morning ?No beards allowed – sideburns would be measured if they looked too long ?Hair must be short enough to not touch the collar of your shirt ?Uniforms wore every day ?White t-shirts were allowed if worn under a collared shirt ?All Engineers and Management wore ties to work 5 days a week until the late 1990’s Don Oberg would walk through every morning at 7:00a. He would say hello to every employee and knew just about everyone by name (or “young man”). In recent years, we've celebrated our anniversary in July... ? This year, we're starting early ??? ? The celebration of 'Year 77' at Oberg begins now, as we reflect on some of the core memories that have shaped Oberg into what it is today. Our list of memories is extensive, but we’ll start off with a few some might remember. Many know that Don Oberg cultivated a strict, meticulous culture built around high expectations from his employees. The infamous PARKING VIOLATION ticket (even though it starts with, “This is not a ticket…”)…was placed on your vehicle?if; -You parked crooked -You parked in the wrong spot (spots were assigned) -You backed into a parking spot (backing in meant you were already thinking about leaving…) In addition, any cars parked out front that dripped oil or had rust had to be moved to the back lot. Last week, Oberg had the opportunity to meet with the Mechanical Engineering Program Staff at Grove City College! We met with the ME Department Professors and had a tour of their machine shop located in Hoyt Hall. The ME students were in the process of building a car for competition which was cool to see. Their goal is to design, build, test, promote, and race a prototype of an all-weather, single-seat, off-road recreational vehicle. Also pictured is the sterling motor project that GCC sophomores are tasked to build. It was exciting to see the advancements that GCC is making in preparing and exposing their engineering students to real-world experiences, particularly with the hands-on approach offered by their on-campus machine shop. Special thanks to Charles Clauss and Luke Johnson for the tour of the machine shop.
