We had the privilege of attending the Region 1 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) competition this weekend in Albany, where students competed tackling real-world construction challenges with teamwork, innovation, and professionalism. The first photo is Norwich University’s team presenting a plan for Baker Concrete Constructors. Watching the Norwich team members present their approach to a real-world and challenging concrete project in Boston was inspiring! Ryan and Jonathan, OAR’s Partners, shared insights on implementing reality capture, BIM, & VDC for Waste Management Inc. recycling on MRF equipment integration projects and again on a shipyard expansion project. They shared how reality capture, BIM, & VDC capabilities provide the students who master them with great opportunities to bring value to their future employers when they enter the AEC sector workforce. Events like this remind us why we’re passionate about what we do—pioneering solutions, sharing knowledge, and supporting the next generation of construction leaders. In 2024, The H.L. Turner Group Inc. utilized OAR's expertise to address a critical issue at the Libby Museum of Natural History: bowing exterior walls in this century-old structure. Using advanced LiDAR technology, we conducted a precise structural scan to determine whether the bowing had worsened since its last scan in 2014. A critical aspect of this project was the hardware that OAR deployed in the field, a Leica Geosystem's RTC 360. If you are an architect, engineer, or contractor considering buying hardware or hiring a provider for a scan, you must understand or ask about the capabilities and limitations of the hardware pertaining to your desired results. Most commercially available LiDAR scanning units would not generate the density and precision required for this task the way an RTC-360 did. We helped American Steel Fabricators, Inc (ASF) overcome complex challenges in the renovation of the Lockwood Mill’s spiral staircases, ensuring a smooth and precise fabrication process. Here’s a quick look at how we made it happen: 1. We used LiDAR scanning to capture the uneven and unlevel structure of the staircases. 2. Our team created a Revit model and exported it to AutoCAD to fit ASF’s 2D workflow, ensuring precision in the fabrication process. 3. The accurate data allowed for prefabrication of railings that fit perfectly, eliminating on-site adjustments and saving time.
