February is Black History Month! This month, we celebrate and appreciate all the Black leaders, creatives, advocates, freedom fighters, abolitionists, disrupters, and visionaries who have contributed to a more just future for all Americans. We honor these movers and shakers by continuing their work and vision every single day in the halls of our office and community. We strive to build a stronger community, we advocate for second chances, and we work to support the path of justice-involved individuals and their families toward success. Happy Black History Month from OAR NoVa!

Two major legislative wins happened this week, the Senate version of the bill (SB 1255) to end the indiscriminate use of youth shackling PASSED UNANIMOUSLY in the Senate. The House bill (HB 2158) that expands access to college education for people who are incarcerated, passed unanimously on Monday in the K-12 subcommittee and passed in the full Education committee today with bi-partisan support. Thank you to all of our legislators for implementing these affirming and badly needed changes for those facing the challenges of incarceration.
