A sustainability management and real estate optimization firm for health systems

关于我们

Oakwell is a comprehensive solution for health system sustainability management and real estate optimization. We partner with hospitals and health systems, through existing sustainability teams or by serving as the sustainability team, to develop custom energy efficiency and consumption reduction programs that reduce spend, improve balance sheets, and free up capital that can be reinvested in patient care. Oakwell’s offerings can help mitigate challenges currently facing health systems, including patient access and capacity constraints. By 2035, Oakwell aims to create pathways for one million more people to gain access to quality care with the savings that the company will have produced for clients. Oakwell was founded by healthcare visionary leaders at Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS), a nationally recognized leader in healthcare sustainability and environmental excellence, and Omicelo, a sustainability-focused investment group. Oakwell’s founding board members include seasoned executives from Omicelo and BMCHS: Bob Biggio, managing partner and senior vice president and chief sustainability and real estate officer of BMCHS; Joshua Pollard, managing partner and chief executive officer of Omicelo; and Kathy Feeney, managing partner and chief operating officer of Omicelo. Daily operations are led by Jack Nelson, head of engineering; Shane Dunne, head of sustainability management and Justina Hierta, director of sustainability research. The team will leverage proven methods to empower health systems to conceptualize, implement, and meet climate and fiscal goals by leveraging BMCHS’ extensive experience and Omicelo’s data-driven approach to financial sustainability.

???Exciting News: Tackling Decarbonization in Healthcare!? At Oakwell, we are reimagining the future of healthcare through an integrated approach to financial and environmental sustainability. We are proud to celebrate a recently announced collaboration between Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Takeda that exemplifies the creative thinking needed to transform healthcare. The two institutions are working to tackle one of the most pressing challenges in the healthcare sector—reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from regulated medical waste. Oakwell will be working closely with BMC to identify cost savings and operational efficiencies and to amplify the learnings and best practices across the healthcare sector. This groundbreaking three-year collaboration?aims to develop and pilot sustainable solutions that will not only decarbonize the healthcare value chain but also pave the way for scaling these practices across the broader ecosystem. Together, Takeda and BMC are committed to addressing environmental challenges that contribute to health disparities and climate-related health risks. As Robert Biggio, SVP and Chief Sustainability Officer at BMC Health System, aptly states:?"Sustainability is healthcare. This collaboration is a critical step in driving innovation for a healthier environment for all communities." ?? Technology, data and partnerships are critical for empowering healthcare sustainability to achieve targeted outcomes. ??? The healthcare sector is responsible for about 8.5% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, with hospital care accounting for the largest share. Tackling this is critical as climate change continues to impact health outcomes nationwide. Currently, 29%?of all hospitals across the U.S. are required to or are voluntarily committed to publicly report GHG emissions and/or energy use data.? ? At Oakwell, we are committed to advancing decarbonization and resource efficiencies in healthcare through partnerships and use of cutting-edge data management systems. By using leading software solutions, aggregating data across vendors, utilities, and integrating tools and data from platforms like the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, we enable health systems to accurately track and report emissions, meet benchmarks, and identify innovative opportunities to improve sustainability and the bottom line. Contact me?to learn more!? ? See the informative and inspiring National Academy of Medicine (NAM) discussion paper, "Emissions Disclosures and Energy Use Reporting by Hospitals in the United States" (Authored by Ana Abel, Joseph McCannon, Hollynd Boyden, Jenny Keroack, Katie Lichter, MD MPH, Aparna Bole, MD, and John Balbus). This paper emphasizes the need for transparent emissions disclosures to enhance accountability and drive change.? ? By collaborating with health systems across the country, Oakwell is not only providing?GHG accounting, but we’re using this data to deliver actionable opportunities?and implement efforts to address?outsized energy and resource consumption, lower operational costs, and meet disclosure requirements, all while building resilient and sustainable healthcare environments. At Oakwell, we’re committed to assisting health systems and progressing toward a healthier?future. #HealthcareSustainability #GHGAccounting #PartnershipsForChange #DataDrivenSolutions #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/e-fTxF9A

The list of cities and states requiring buildings to meet increasingly strict energy efficiency and emissions reduction targets is growing quickly. Missing these targets can be costly, especially for health systems with large footprints and complex operations. In our latest article, Justina Hierta, our Director of Sustainability Research, dives into the jurisdictions committed to Building Performance Standards (BPS) and reduced emissions, the significant penalties associated with missed targets, and the ROI of achieving a lower carbon footprint. While compliance helps you avoid fines, achieving BPS offers much more to your business. Oakwell’s holistic approach to these regulations drives energy savings, enhances patient care, and improves sustainability. We guide building owners and health systems through the complex process of strategizing, planning, and executing profitable sustainability solutions. Read the full article to learn more about this new reality for hospitals and the impressive results of one health system that implemented our recommendations. https://lnkd.in/eeYFnqdX #Sustainability #Healthcare #EnergyEfficiency #BuildingPerformance
