Persistent drought in California and changing water use regulations present a challenge to almond orchards throughout the state of California. The need to use reduced water and try new methods to conserve water can feel overwhelming. Perennial cover crops offer a solution to these challenges by improving water infiltration and holding capacity in the soil. Join the Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative on December 5th to learn about the benefits of perennial cover crops for water conservation. Kelsey Fenn, UC Davis PhD Student will share how perennial cover crops can benefit soil water. Learn more about how Oakville bluegrass, a novel perennial cover crop with reverse season dormancy, can help your orchard conserve water. A short presentation will be followed by a Q&A. https://lnkd.in/gWBK96yb

Growers helping growers build healthy farm ecosystems and balance sheets
关于我们
The Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative helps growers work together to increase the natural capital of their land while also increasing their profits. Growers want to be good stewards of their land, but today it is often too costly and risky to adopt new practices that build healthy farm ecosystems. We equip growers with tools and techniques proven to reduce soil erosion, improve soil health, conserve water, reduce chemical inputs, and increase diversity below and above the ground. We use rigorous methods to quantify the financial and environmental impacts of new practices, and seek outside resources to make new practices profitable for our members. To start delivering on this mission, we have secured exclusive access for members to a novel perennial cover crop (Oakville bluegrass) that lies dormant during the summer. We have also partnered to develop an information service that tracks cost savings and soil carbon gains where the cover crop is installed. The long-term environmental benefits of no-till cover-cropping include soil retention, better soil health, greater water holding capacity, and less nutrient leaching. Financial payback can be achieved in one or two seasons, with returns of 10X-50X over the life of an orchard or vineyard.

The OBC team enjoyed welcoming our NPO from the USDA, Matthew Denton, to California last week to see Oakville bluegrass in action! We were able to show Matthew some newly planted fields, some existing fields that are still dormant, our soil sampling methodology, and more. It's been an honor to partner with the USDA Partnerships for Climate-smart Commodities Program and help growers in our region mitigate the cost of first time Oakville bluegrass installation. Now is a great time to plant a cover crop if you haven't yet already! Oakville bluegrass can help you save money as compared to an annual cover crop in vineyards or a bare floor practice in almond orchards. Cover crops also improve water infiltration and soil holding capacity, build soil organic carbon, and boost soil health. Let's talk about what it could mean for your farm! https://lnkd.in/g-VcFzbB

Installations of permanent reverse-season cover crop, Oakville bluegrass, have started for the season! Our team is busy finalizing plans with our members and participants in the USDA Partnerships for Climate-smart Commodities grant to plant many more acres! This is good news! It means that, depending on their current practices, producers will save money over time. It also means that the ground will be covered in living roots boosting soil health and improving water infiltration. Now is the perfect time to plant! We still have incentive dollars available for the year and a team excited to help you make this exciting choice for your vineyard or orchard. Reach out today! https://lnkd.in/g-VcFzbB
