In the fall, Osh will move to his new forever home at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, reuniting with other African elephants. He has lived at the Oakland Zoo for 20 years, where many guests and Zoo followers have made memories with him. Throughout various life stages, Osh and other African elephants have been integral to the Zoo community, forming strong bonds with its members. The Zoo is home to over 700 native and exotic animals. We're recognized for our outstanding animal care, particularly our elephant care program, and for our Leed-certified, 17,000 square foot, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital—the largest wild animal veterinary facility in Northern California. June 2018 introduces Oakland Zoo guests to an entirely new experience, California Trail, a monumental expansion will further our commitment to animal care, education, and conservation with a focus on this state’s remarkable native wildlife—both past and present.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the last California grizzly bear sighting in Sequoia National Park, never to be seen again. This state icon exemplifies the beautiful, native California wildlife that can easily be lost. This campaign will bring awareness to hundreds of native California species by highlighting 24 important species to protect in 2024. Participating institutions will host different activation events throughout the year that will bring and inspire awareness.? ? As part of our commitment to this campaign, Oakland Zoo created 25 trading cards that reflect the species chosen to represent it. These cards feature diverse fauna and flora, from mountain lions to the California jewelflower. We hope they will inspire our guests to learn how to Coexist with Wildlife in their home state, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for our native species. On Tuesday afternoon, an 8-month-old tiger cub was brought to Oakland Zoo by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, who rescued her from a privately owned facility. Our vet team determined that this tiger is suffering from multiple fractures and metabolic bone disease. Our vets are cautiously optimistic that she will make a near-full recovery. We are Taking Action to promote responsible pet ownership and to rescue and re-home improperly owned animals, including this sweet, mistreated tiger.
