ORISE is managed by ORAU, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and federal contractor, for DOE’s Office of Science. Using the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM), which outlines methods for planning, implementing and evaluating radiological surveys to best meet dose- or risk-based regulations, ORISE serves as the key independent verification contractor for U.S. Department of Energy cleanup projects and the only verification contractor for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. By operating a cytogenetic biodosimetry laboratory (CBL), ORISE is helping the U.S. Department of Energy close a critical gap in our nation’s ability to respond to a radiological or nuclear incident. The use of radiation for medical, industrial, research, and other applications raises the risk of accidental human exposure.
