In Namwala #Zambia, a weekly meet-up has now become the norm at Nzatu Food Group's #nursery and #training site. As we continue the planting of #Moringa, the #indigenous #Mukangala and identify spots for #beehives, the tribal communities are joining us to help and learn how they can replicate the process on their own lands. It is important to show the optimum spacing between trees, ensuring enough space for intercropping with #NitrogenFixing legumes, and the right amount of manure (#OrganicFertilizer) to be used. Accompanied by the #DistrictForestryOfficer and #WardCouncillors to supervise and support the training sessions, we see increased participation by community members every week ! The intersection of the borders of #Angola, #Botswana, #Namibia, #Zambia and #Zimbabwe has seen a concentration of #elephants of over 228,000 individuals, with 58% of this number in Botswana and only 2% and 3% in Zambia and Angola respectively. Creating ecological linkages or #WildlifeCorridors for the population to disburse in a more even fashion in the #KAZA region, especially towards #Zambia, can reduce strain on resources on any one country to manage large populations, and can also significantly decrease the incidences of human-wildlife conflict. The population is concentrated here due to various reasons including #intensiveAgriculture and #industrialHumanSettlements, that block the traditional path of the elephants to naturally disperse. Nzatu Food Group and Peace Parks Foundation , have proposed a strategy to create #WildlifeCorridors with #training and #sensitizing the #indigenous communities along the corridor, to prevent the conversion of the corridor into intensive agriculture land and/or industrial human settlements.? I’m in Roma at FAO HQ following the COP16 biodiversity discussions and would like to share some first impressions. 153 Countries present, no USA, trying hardly to find consensus on biodiversity important issues not solved in past Cali meeting. Definitely not easy and very complex. Many times oppositions are arised to change wording or decisions ,losing, to me , the global vision and urgecy to solve and mitigate biodiversity losses that combined with climate change will make live on our planet very hard or impossible for future generations. We are accelerating the destruction while debating and postponing final decision as if we have a lot of time. I believe that private sector companies of all industries , should really come in, ( particularly the so called iconic brands) invest into environmental impact projects and strongly communicate about those to arise general public awareness. We have no much time left.
