Celebrating Urmi Dande...and loving this assignment, Joanne Tombrakos ??
While I've introduced myself often, this time was a little different. In our Digital Marketing class at New York University last week, we had one of the most interesting midterms of making a?self-marketing video to pitch ourselves in just?two minutes–enough time to capture attention, tell our story, and leave the audience curious for more. A huge thank you to Professor Joanne Tombrakos for pushing us to answer the most important question:?Who am I? #PersonalBranding #DigitalMarketing #SelfReflection #NYU

"I aspire to be a thought leader in marketing, combining my expertise in strategy and community-building to drive impactful campaigns. One of my key goals is to build strong, engaged communities that create meaningful connections and inspire growth. I see myself in a role where I can leverage innovation and storytelling to amplify voices and foster inclusivity. Long-term, I also hope to mentor aspiring marketers and lead initiatives that positively impact society." - Ekta Khurana, an NYU SPS Integrated Marketing & Communications graduate student earning her Master's in Integrated Marketing. On her experience at SPS, Ekta says it has been "nothing short of transformative. Every class challenges me to think critically, collaborate effectively, and adapt to real-world scenarios. Beyond academics, the SPS community is incredibly supportive and dynamic. I’ve had the privilege of serving as Head of Social Media and now Head of Outreach for the Integrated Marketing Association, where I’ve led initiatives that foster collaboration and create opportunities for students to connect and grow. These leadership roles have enriched my experience and given me the chance to leave a lasting impact on our community." We were honored to welcome Carla Zakhem-Hassan, CMO of JPMorganChase, for our Leadership in Changing Times event, moderated by Tariq Khan (He/Him/His), Clinical Associate Professor at NYU School of Professional Studies. Carla shared her inspiring journey—one that began with uncertainty but was shaped by risk-taking, resilience, and a global mindset. As an immigrant, Carla spoke about the pressure of not being able to fail—always pushing forward, embracing challenges across industries from Kellogg's to PepsiCo to Toys ‘R’ Us, and ultimately finding her place in financial services. She spoke candidly about the ongoing challenge of work-life balance. She reminded us that sometimes, all it takes is speaking up—whether it’s adjusting a meeting time or setting boundaries—to create a better balance. Some key takeaways from Carla’s leadership philosophy: ?? Set a clear vision—Ensure your team knows what they’re working toward. ?? Surround yourself with top talent—Great leaders empower others, even those who could one day step into your position. Strategy, execution, and putting the right people in place are essential to driving success. ?? Lead with empathy and authenticity—Support your team and create a culture of trust. ?? Be adaptable & collaborative—Can you work with those who have different views? Can you be flexible and open to new ideas? ?? Curiosity is key—Carla values a learning mindset over just experience when hiring. Problem-solvers who take initiative stand out. She also touched on AI’s growing role in marketing, helping her team enhance efficiency while still valuing the power of human connection through live experiences and storytelling. Carla’s emphasized the importance of representation, sharing how being an immigrant and woman of color has shaped her leadership. By being open about her experiences, she hopes to inspire others facing similar challenges and imposter syndrome to stay resilient and embrace their unique perspectives. Thank you Carla Zakhem-Hassan for sharing your time and insights with our students. A huge thank you to Tariq Khan for leading this engaging conversation. We also appreciate Dr. Jose Mendoza for introducing the event and representing IM&C leadership. #WeAreSPS #NYUSPSIMC #NYUSPS

Our recent event, "Pushing Boundaries: Savage X Fenty's CMO on Leadership and Disrupting Fashion," was truly inspiring. Vanessa Wallace shared her journey of becoming a confident leader, emphasizing how her background in sports shaped her ability to balance, multitask, and think creatively. She highlighted the importance of setting a vision as a leader—coaching her team, setting goals together, and collaborating with fellow executives, including Rihanna, the fearless and influential force behind the brand. As Savage X Fenty’s Founder and Chief Visionary Officer, Rihanna plays an active role in shaping the brand’s marketing strategies. A key takeaway? Savage X Fenty is redefining marketing by making diversity, inclusivity, and representation core values of the brand. With a strong commitment to authentic storytelling, consumer connection, and cultural relevance, the brand continues to disrupt the industry by truly listening to its audience and moving “at the speed of culture.” Vanessa also shared invaluable career advice for students preparing to enter the job market: ?? Build a well-rounded resume – Highlight a variety of experiences that showcase your skill development, in addition to internships and extracurriculars. ?? Be intentional with mentors – Clearly communicate what guidance you need and want, because everyone's time is of value. ?? Expand your network strategically – Always ask, “Who are 2-3 other people I should connect with?” to continue conversations, grow your network, and create follow-up opportunities. Thank you, Vanessa, for sharing your time, insights, and leadership philosophy with our students. ?? A huge thank you as well to Sheezan Bakali, IM&C Adjunct Instructor, for connecting us with Vanessa and leading this insightful conversation. We also appreciate Stephanie A. Mattera, Academic Director, Public Relations & Corporate Communication and Clinical Assistant Professor, for introducing the event and representing IM&C leadership.
