This week, I am so excited to be attending the Our Stories, Our Solutions: Summit on Transformative Solutions for Economic Equity hosted by IHDSC NYU! Together with an inspiring group of leaders and advocates from community-based organizations, we’ll be exploring the connection between economic inclusion and child and family wellbeing—and what actions communities can take to help all families thrive. I’m especially looking forward to discussing findings from a recent review of the research literature on how economic inclusion impacts children’s and families’ health outcomes, conducted in partnership with Mothering Justice, Southern Economic Advancement Project, Henry Street Settlement, Hope Street Family Center, New York University, and RWJF.? A new white paper by UC San Diego and New York University researchers led by Drs. Mica Pollock and Hirokazu Yoshikawa reveals the experiences of K-12 educators and parents in Florida grappling with state policies and policy effects restricting access to instruction, books, courses, clubs, professional development, and basic student supports. The white paper is accompanied by a robust data archive that includes accounts from respondents, summarized and contextualized to understand Florida policies in the national context. Ideologies provide cultural stories that affect young children's understanding of their place in society. These narratives influence the learning environments of our youth, sometimes validating certain groups while marginalizing others. This Social Justice for Young Children Conversation Series?piece is strikingly relevant to the current socio-political climate, exploring the often-overlooked impact of political ideologies on young children’s development.
