Yesterday was World Kidney Day. Kidney health is public health. We’re highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and prevention efforts in combating chronic kidney disease (CKD), a silent but serious public health issue. Why It Matters: According to the National Kidney Foundation (2024), 35.5 million U.S. adults are affected by CKD, yet 9 out of 10 don’t know they have it until the disease is advanced. Early detection is critical, particularly for individuals with diabetes and hypertension, as 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure will develop CKD (CDC, 2024). The Prevention Imperative: At NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center (PRC), our work focuses on bridging community and clinical interventions to improve chronic disease prevention, including CKD. Evidence-based approaches emphasize: - Routine health screenings to detect CKD early (American Society of Nephrology, 2023). - Blood pressure & blood sugar management to reduce kidney stress (National Institutes of Health, 2024). - Dietary interventions such as sodium reduction and plant-based eating patterns to improve kidney function (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 2024). What’s Next? As research evolves, the need for multisectoral interventions, spanning healthcare policy, education, and public awareness is more urgent than ever. We must move beyond awareness into action. At the NYU-CUNY PRC, we’re integrating social care into clinical follow-ups through our Community-Clinical Linkages (CCL) model. A patient’s health is more than just medical, it’s about housing, food security, and other social factors that shape well-being. Through coordinated efforts, we ensure patients receive holistic care that addresses both medical and social needs. March is National Nutrition Month, a time to delve into the profound impact of dietary choices on health and chronic disease prevention. At the NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center (PRC), our mission is to advance understanding of how nutrition influences public health. Our research emphasizes that a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats is pivotal in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. For instance, studies have shown that higher intakes of fruits and vegetables are associated with a decreased risk for some types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. The NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center is dedicated to designing and disseminating innovative interventions that bridge community and clinical settings. Our core research agenda focuses on improving access to preventive care and promoting chronic disease management through nutrition education and support. Recent Findings and Initiatives - Community Health Worker Interventions: Our Project RICE study demonstrated that culturally tailored interventions led by community health workers significantly improved dietary habits and health outcomes in Asian American populations. Participants experienced positive changes in weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure over six months. - Dietary Patterns and Health Outcomes: Collaborative research indicates that adherence to healthy dietary patterns correlates with a decreased risk of major chronic diseases. This underscores the importance of dietary modifications in disease prevention strategies.
