A partnership of NYC institutions committed to reducing health disparities in NYC

关于我们

Established in 2014, the NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center (NYU-CUNY PRC) implements, evaluates, and disseminates community-clinical linkage interventions to reduce health disparities in diverse communities of New York City. The NYU-CUNY PRC is one of a network of 26 existing CDC Prevention Research Centers located throughout the country. The NYU-CUNY PRC's core research advances the study of innovative combinations of community and clinic-based interventions for improved linkage to preventive care and chronic disease prevention and management. The overall goals of the NYU-CUNY PRC are to: ? Expand and sustain a prevention science research infrastructure to advance applied public health research and accelerate translation of research into practice. ? Engage partners for translation of research findings into practice. ? Disseminate and communicate research findings and translation products to multiple audiences through traditional and innovative formats. ? Provide training, technical assistance, and subject matter expertise to our local stakeholders and colleagues across the PRC network to facilitate translation of applied public health research to improve population health. • As spring unfolds, it's an opportune moment to rejuvenate our health practices. Aligning with the NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center's (PRC) mission to enhance chronic disease prevention through community and clinical interventions, we present four evidence-based strategies to bolster your well-being this season: 1. Manage Allergies Proactively: Seasonal allergens can exacerbate respiratory conditions. Monitoring local pollen forecasts and adhering to prescribed allergy medications can mitigate symptoms, promoting respiratory health. 2. Engage in Outdoor Physical Activities: Longer daylight hours provide an excellent opportunity for physical activity, a cornerstone of chronic disease prevention. Activities such as walking, cycling, or gardening can enhance cardiovascular health and overall fitness. 3. Incorporate Seasonal Produce into Your Diet: Consuming fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables ensures a nutrient-rich diet, supporting immune function and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. 4. Maintain Adequate Hydration: Increased outdoor activity elevates the body's need for hydration. Drinking sufficient water is essential for optimal physiological functions and overall health. Embracing these practices aligns with the PRC's commitment to fostering healthier communities through preventive strategies. By integrating such habits, we take proactive steps toward improved health outcomes. • Yesterday was World Kidney Day. Kidney health is public health. We’re highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and prevention efforts in combating chronic kidney disease (CKD), a silent but serious public health issue. Why It Matters: According to the National Kidney Foundation (2024), 35.5 million U.S. adults are affected by CKD, yet 9 out of 10 don’t know they have it until the disease is advanced. Early detection is critical, particularly for individuals with diabetes and hypertension, as 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure will develop CKD (CDC, 2024). The Prevention Imperative: At NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center (PRC), our work focuses on bridging community and clinical interventions to improve chronic disease prevention, including CKD. Evidence-based approaches emphasize: - Routine health screenings to detect CKD early (American Society of Nephrology, 2023). - Blood pressure & blood sugar management to reduce kidney stress (National Institutes of Health, 2024). - Dietary interventions such as sodium reduction and plant-based eating patterns to improve kidney function (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 2024). What’s Next? As research evolves, the need for multisectoral interventions, spanning healthcare policy, education, and public awareness is more urgent than ever. We must move beyond awareness into action. Let’s use this World Kidney Day to reflect on how public health initiatives, healthcare systems, and individuals can collaborate to prioritize kidney health. • At the NYU-CUNY PRC, we’re integrating social care into clinical follow-ups through our Community-Clinical Linkages (CCL) model. A patient’s health is more than just medical, it’s about housing, food security, and other social factors that shape well-being. Through coordinated efforts, we ensure patients receive holistic care that addresses both medical and social needs. This innovative approach, led by the PRC’s 2024-2029 core project, highlights how health accessibility begins with addressing the whole person. March is National Nutrition Month, a time to delve into the profound impact of dietary choices on health and chronic disease prevention. At the NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center (PRC), our mission is to advance understanding of how nutrition influences public health. Our research emphasizes that a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats is pivotal in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. For instance, studies have shown that higher intakes of fruits and vegetables are associated with a decreased risk for some types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. The NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center is dedicated to designing and disseminating innovative interventions that bridge community and clinical settings. Our core research agenda focuses on improving access to preventive care and promoting chronic disease management through nutrition education and support. Recent Findings and Initiatives - Community Health Worker Interventions: Our Project RICE study demonstrated that culturally tailored interventions led by community health workers significantly improved dietary habits and health outcomes in Asian American populations. Participants experienced positive changes in weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure over six months. - Dietary Patterns and Health Outcomes: Collaborative research indicates that adherence to healthy dietary patterns correlates with a decreased risk of major chronic diseases. This underscores the importance of dietary modifications in disease prevention strategies. This National Nutrition Month, we encourage you to reflect on your dietary habits and consider integrating more nutrient-dense foods into your meals. By making informed food choices, you can take proactive steps toward enhancing your health and well-being. Epilepsy impacts millions of lives, yet stigma and misinformation often overshadow the real challenges faced by those living with it. Did you know: ?- Epilepsy affects over 3.4 million people in the U.S. ?- Early intervention and education can make a significant difference in managing seizures. At NYU-CUNY PRC, we’re part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Managing Epilepsy Well (MEW) network, working to improve the lives of those living with epilepsy through community-based support and innovative care models. Let’s break the stigma, increase understanding, and ensure that everyone affected by epilepsy has access to the care they deserve.
