20￠ for a pint of ice cream?! It’s the year 1900 in this #NYTMCollection photograph and a sign on the doorway of Fussell’s Ice Cream shop lists the price of a pint at 20￠ and a quart at 35￠. Other available cold confections include water ice, sorbet, glacé, punch, and charlotte (also known as ice box cake). Delivery carriages are parked in front of the store on Manhattan’s 4th Avenue near 10th Street, awaiting their next load. This image was taken in preparation for the construction of New York City’s first subway line, the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit), which opened in 1904. Survey photographs like this one were meant to capture street level conditions before tunnels and stations were built below. However, they contain so much more. This image provides a time capsule of life in #NYC at the start of the 20th century and is also a wonderful window – literally – into ice cream history. For that reason, it is November’s First Friday feature from our Subway Construction Photograph Collection. Fussell’s Ice Cream Company was started by C. Jacob Fussell, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. Fussell is often referred to as the “father of the ice cream industry,” because he was the first person to mass produce the frosty treat. What began as a side hustle turned into a lucrative business when Fussell decided to open an ice cream factory in 1851. Around that time, improvements in refrigeration technology began to make it easier to keep things cold. By the time this photo was taken, Fussell had been in the ice cream business for nearly 50 years, during which time U.S. ice cream production had gone from a few thousand gallons per year to over 5 million! Fussell lived to the age of 93. Who says dessert is bad for you?
