March is Women’s History Month and throughout history there have been multiple famous women with disabilities that have made significant contributions. Judith ‘Judy’ Heumann is remembered as the “mother” of the disability rights movement for her activism and strong commitment to the struggle for disability rights. From leading the 504 sit-ins to fighting for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Judy dedicated her life to advancing the rights of people with disabilities.

Today is Harriet Tubman Day! Tubman had epileptic seizures since she was 12 and is remembered for leading enslaved Black people to freedom. Recent studies show that black children are less likely to be diagnosed with a developmental disability than white children showing similar signs, and even when diagnosed, they are less likely to receive the same services as white children. Honoring Harriet Tubman's legacy means working to close the gaps in diagnosis and service delivery for black children with developmental disabilities.
