We had a wonderful event in Rochester promoting financial literacy, including how best to manage debt and save for the future. Big thanks to the Rochester Mayor MALIK EVANS and New York State Certified Public Accountants for their help in co-hosting it with my office. There are a number of financial programs that can help New Yorkers, including the college savings program NY 529 and NY ABLE to assist people with disabilities save tax free. Public servants at the State Comptroller’s office are driven to do, learn and achieve more. Jose Fernandez, technical lead of our Drupal web development team, is the embodiment of this spirit. Jose immigrated to the U.S. from Lima, Peru, in 2007 after landing an unexpected interview with the U.S. Embassy, and acceptance into the diversity visa program. In this country, he learned English, continued his education, and became a web developer. He joined the State Comptroller’s Communications’ web development team in 2016 to assist with migrating the agency’s 15,000+ page website to the Drupal content management system. He was critical in the project’s long-term planning, later taking leadership of the team and the project management activities necessary for the site’s launch in 2020. Jose has stayed driven throughout his time at the State Comptroller’s office. He is a graduate of our Leadership Development Program and is a major asset to our agency in many ways. Under his thoughtful leadership and programming acumen, his team continuously innovates and improves our website so that New Yorkers have the best possible experience interacting with our office. He’s a proud public servant and enjoys the work-life balance State service offers, allowing him to fully enjoy time with his wife and two children, Fernanda and Leo. “When you’re here, you’re focused on your job and everyone is doing their part. When you ask for something, everybody wants to help. Everyone has your back,” he says. “And when you’re home, you’re with your family. I really enjoy that.” We are inspired by Jose’s story and are grateful to have him on our team. Thank you, Jose! Markets remains volatile, but on balance, #WallStreet is having a very good year. My office’s annual check-up on New York’s securities industry shows profits in the first half of this year were nearly 80% higher than that period in 2023.

It’s great to join the CSEA Local 1000 Annual Meeting and speak with the delegates who are moving the state forward. The union and my office have a strong partnership, and I was able to thank their members for their hard work, public service, and commitment to building a better New York. ??

My office is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October. This week, OSC employees gathered to wear pink to show their support for co-workers, their families, and others who’ve been touched by the disease. This was followed by a lunchtime discussion with a registered nurse. Thank you to everyone who took part in this important cause. #wearpink #breastcancerawarenessmonth
