Good Morning from Washington D.C ?? We're so excited to join the U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Building America (ABA) Convening this week! As an ABA grantee, the convening is an excellent opportunity to learn, network and help maximize our impact via Registered Apprenticeships. Some cool things we're doing while we are here; Our very own Colleen McDonald, NBCT joined a dynamic panel on Educator Registered Apprenticeships, joined by the U.S. Department of Labor, Deputy Assistant Secretary Manny Lamarre, U.S. Department of Education, Chief of Staff Brenda Calderon, Ph.D. and Andrea Krell, Director of Teacher Residency and Apprenticeship Programs at The University of Southern Mississippi?? And our Project Manager, Ellie Fitzgerald, presented at the hands-on session, "Setting the Stage for Grant Sustainability Through Data Storytelling", where we received real time, actionable feedback. This is especially problematic as less-prepared teachers leave positions at higher rates, which negatively impacts the learning environment in the schools where they are placed. These are often those serving high populations of students of color and students from low-income households (Bland et al., 2023). Many of these temporary solutions prove to be unsustainable, risking the quality of the education provided to all students. We need to pivot to look at the crisis as an opportunity to invest in workforce development. And like the federal Graduate Medical Education program (that funds doctors' residencies), support for states addressing their educator workforce needs, through registered apprenticeships, must be embedded in a federal funding stream.
