As promised, we are sharing what we love about the books on our Holiday Book Guide. Here is a write up from Nadia Khan our policy analyst, on what she learned from Real Self-Care by Pooja Lakshmin, MD. If you have read it, let us know your thoughts. If not, check it out when you have a chance! —— Real Self-Care by Dr. Pooja Lakshmin is a deeply impactful and interesting read. This book introduces us to a new way of approaching the commodified version of "self-care" that we are all spoon fed by influencers and marketing campaigns. With a focus on identifying your values and engaging in "real self-care" as an ongoing practice of being rather than something that can be bought in a store or practiced in a yoga studio, Dr. Lakshmin rewrites the story on self-care. Through her own experiences and stories from patients, I found this book particularly moving and unique in the world of self-help. I often find myself asking the questions that Dr. Lakshmin poses in this book- why are quick-fix solutions like journaling and nightly baths not doing the trick, or only making me feel better for a short amount of time? This book encourages us to set boundaries, treat ourselves with compassion, and think about self-care through the novel lens of being an "internal, quiet process that has the power to create an external and dramatic change". When we think of self-care, it is easy to think of things we can or should be doing- Dr. Lakshmin suggests that instead we should be focused on creating new ways of being by taking care of ourselves on the inside. By giving us actionable tools, such as the Real Self-Care Compass (pg. 191), Dr. Lakshmin challenges us to take on the difficult, rewarding work of real self-care.
