Earlier this fall, we announced our first Open Data Challenge—an open call for data explorers to use the MTA’s open data on data.ny.gov to build something cool. After reviewing over 100 submissions, we’re excited to share that this year’s winner is Stephanie Dang’s project Art Off The Rails! Stephanie Dang's interactive map makes the locations of the MTA’s permanent art collection easily accessible. Users can explore the artwork at each subway station by clicking the corresponding circle on the map. The project uses the Svelte JavaScript framework and is open-source: https://lnkd.in/gtZpjxgc We are so grateful to every single individual who took the time to submit a project!?Learn more about the challenge and see some of our favorite finalists here: https://lnkd.in/gzf9e_zv

This week, we're celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which has served as a vital link connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn since Nov. 21, 1964. When it opened, it was the world’s largest suspension span and today, remains the longest suspension bridge in North America at a total 9,865 feet between abutments. Designed by renowned civil engineer Othman Amman, the bridge carries more than 1,600 MTA buses every weekday and carried over 80 million vehicles in 2023. Here are some historic photos of the iconic bridge! -- Photo Information: Photo 1: Opening day motorcade crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on November 21, 1964 Photo 2: The first car to cross over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
