The New York Climate Exchange

Adaptation(s)2.0 will be hosting guided exhibition tours and a walking tour of the island this weekend on October 19th and October 20th from 12pm-4pm as part of Open House New York. If you have not been to see the exhibitions which include never before publicly exhibited projects in NYC, the Maldives and the Patagonian Archipelagos, please come join us and get a glimpse of climate action in progress. The show, curated by the Center for Climate Adaptation, brings together the practices of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and Foster + Partners alongside Pratt Institute student/ faculty, research and courses around the subject of climate adaptation on islands. Implemented and speculative projects offer an array of perspectives and scales for some of the most vulnerable and significant populations of human and non-human inhabitants to be impacted by the affects of irreversible climate change in the near future. Collateral exhibitions and installations from Pratt Faculty/Students and Research Centers will be on display at (nearby) Nolan Park 11 (both days) and integrated into the Walking Tour Sunday the 20th. A common theme during this 2024 #NYCW was a growing recognition of the inextricable link between human well-being and the health of the planet. I met Jared Vere, founder of Live The Process, who believes the lack of progress in tacking climate change is a marketing issue— if climate change is marketed as relating to our wellness and #longevity, it becomes much easier for people to connect the Earth’s health with their own, leading to changes in consumer behavior and then products we see on the market. At a The New York Climate Exchange talk I attended, moderated by Michael Berkowitz, panelists Saadia Madsberj, Jody Springer, Tee (Terisa) Thomas, & Dr. Meenakshi Chabba talked about the resilience dividend — additional benefits derived from solving a community resilience problem — to fund climate change & environmental improvement projects. Many of these dividends show the co-benefits of ecosystem improvements directly related to our health. An example of this is a University of Miami study showing that neighborhoods with higher levels of tree cover and greenery can decrease the risk for 13 different chronic conditions i.e. the greenest neighborhoods in MDC have a 25% lower risk of a heart attack. We now know that planting trees is not only good for heat reduction and carbon removal, but has the significant co-benefits of health improvements. This should be enough reason to plant trees in front of everyone’s house! This framing encourages a shift toward viewing climate solutions as essential not just for environmental health but also for #publichealth, community resilience, and long-term societal wellness. These connections imply new pathways to secure funding and investment by broadening the scope of benefits associated with climate initiatives. Feeling #inspired!
