The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is a city agency of nearly 6,000 employees whose primary responsibility is to manage the city’s water supply. DEP distributes more than one billion gallons of clean drinking water each day to nine million New Yorkers and treats over a billion gallons of wastewater daily at fourteen treatment facilities within the five boroughs. As the city agency responsible for New York City’s environment, DEP also regulates air quality, hazardous waste, and noise pollution. Out of the Archives: In 1908, our laborers began drilling holes for explosives to create the Catskill Aqueduct, which today delivers 40% of NYC’s world-famous water from the Catskill Mountains. By 1915, water from the Ashokan Reservoir began flowing with gravity alone along the 92-mile aqueduct. Photo date: November 6, 1908. New GI Playground for the Bronx DEP, the Trust for Public Land (TPL), Congressman Ritchie Torres, Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), Council Member Pierina Ana Sanchez, staff, students, and others joined together on Oct. 25 to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Green Infrastructure playground at P.S. 306/M.S. 331 in Morris Heights, The Bronx. DEP provided $1.5 million in funding to replace the formerly asphalt playground with new green infrastructure, which will absorb 2 million gallons of stormwater annually, helping to combat flooding in the area and reduce pollution in the East River and New York Harbor. The old playground had been plagued with sinkholes that would flood during rainstorms. The new playground features green infrastructure elements such as shade trees, plantings, permeable pavers, and a synthetic turf field that allow the playground to capture 2 million gallons of rainwater a year. These features will better manage stormwater runoff that can flood streets and overwhelm sewer systems, as well as reduce sewer overflows and protect the Harlem River watershed.? Climate Change Panel Named New York City Chief Climate Officer and DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala recently announced the appointment of the fifth New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC), an independent advisory body that synthesizes scientific information on climate change and advises city policymakers on local resiliency and adaptation strategies that protect against extreme heat, heavy rain, coastal storm surge, and other climate hazards. Their research and findings will continue to inform the Adams administration’s ongoing efforts to ensure that New York City is prepared for the impacts of climate change. “The members of NPCC5 bring diverse research backgrounds and expertise, and city agencies at the forefront of climate work have much to gain from their collaboration and knowledge,” said Aggarwala.
