This week New York City Emergency Management Department recognized #WomensHistoryMonth with a panel discussion featuring three fantastic NYC leaders: Camille Joseph Varlack , Lisa Bova-Hiatt & Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson. We also held discussions on Women in Response, Women in Crisis Communications and Women in Risk Reduction. NYCEM is staffed with 50% females, and our executive staff is 50% female. We are proud to offer paid internships, fellowships, entry level jobs, growth paths and leadership roles to all qualified candidates. We cherish the relationships we build and the friendships we form. Emergency management is demanding, fulfilling, frustrating, exhilarating, and the best career I could have ever imagined. Thank you to our panelists and internal staff for taking the time to share their lessons learned and sage advice. In celebration of Women's History Month, we are pleased to share that we will be hosting a virtual panel discussion to discuss Women in Emergency Management on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. EST. The panel will be moderated by GNY CEO Doreen Thomann-Howe and will feature former FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell (the first woman to ever be confirmed in this position) as well as New York City Emergency Management Department First Deputy Commissioner Christina Farrell. As we continue to support disaster recovery efforts in Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires, Afya is proud to continue sending essential supplies to our partners on the ground. We sincerely appreciate UJA-Federation of New York, NYC Emergency Management, NYU Langone Health, and Distribute Aid for their generous donations and support in making this possible. This week, with the help of Telegraph we shipped 8,609 lbs. of vital medical equipment to LA using railroad freight, harnessing their innovative platform to help move cargo efficiently. Thanks to their support, these supplies will reach up to 80,000 individuals. Since January, Afya has sent a total of 32,113 lbs. of critical medical and hygiene supplies to the Los Angeles area, and we’re committed to supporting impacted communities. We’re deeply grateful for our partnerships in this effort who help make our work possible. ??

John D. Solomon Fellow K’gnausa Yodkerepauprai?is honored and excited to be part of this year’s fellowship, the 13th cohort of this prestigious program. Placed at New York City Emergency Management Department, K'gnausa has been actively contributing to the Government Relations team, tracking legislation and analyzing policies that impact emergency management in New York City. From monitoring key legislative developments to developing an interactive mapping tool for elected officials’ jurisdictions, K'gnausa is dedicated to strengthening NYCEM’s ability to advocate for critical resources and policies. Through this fellowship, K'gnausa is also engaging with the community by supporting Ready New York, ensuring New Yorkers have the essential information they need to stay prepared. DHSES conducted a Tabletop Exercise in NYC last week with NYC Emergency Management to address the threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in transit systems. Over 100 local, state, and federal law enforcement officials and security experts attended, including representatives from five Bomb Squads in downstate NY.
