Today’s #ThrowbackThursday photo shows a scene from #NYCDOC’s Medal Day Ceremony in November 2011 when former Commissioner Dora B. Schriro presented Assistant Deputy Warden Jennings and Captain Walsh with the Meritorious Duty Award for their heroism during a three-alarm fire at the George Motchan Detention Center (GMDC) on #RikersIsland earlier that year. #ICYMI: This past Friday, the Boldest family celebrated Medal Day 2024, which included four recipients of the prestigious Meritorious Duty Award. November 18, 2024 will forever be an important moment in time at #NYCDOC as the Department hosted its first-ever Men’s Conference at the #NYPD Academy in #CollegePoint. Led by Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, the historic conference enabled the men of the Department to participate in a full-day interactive program to support their mental, physical, emotional and social health and more. “We want the men of DOC to continue to strengthen their bonds, enjoy some camaraderie, foster collaboration regardless of rank, and to come away knowing that we truly value them in our lives,” the Commissioner explained. “The goal of this Men’s Conference is to facilitate partnerships, learn how to combat life’s struggles, and emerge as strong leaders.” Yesterday’s sessions also aimed to provide information and guidance to assist the men in their professional growth in the Department, which included a Table Talk with Assistant Chief of Security Charlton Lemon. The Chief, a highly-respected and decorated DOC veteran, is the second-highest ranking uniformed member in the Department. #NFL Super Bowl XXVI Champion and Pastor Tim Johnson, who leads the Fatherless No More Initiative on #RikersIsland, also provided words of encouragement to The Boldest men as they continue 24/7/365 to help keep #NewYorkCity safe. #JoinTheBoldest

On Nov. 15, #NYCDOC hosted its 2024 Medal Day Ceremony at the #NYPD Academy in #CollegePoint. The ceremony, which was the first one held since 2021, celebrated the exceptional public service of the Department’s uniformed and non-uniformed staff. Joined by New York City Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Chauncey Parker, Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie presented medals to honor staff for their extraordinary display of bravery while working in city jails. This year’s honorees included, among others, Officer Wright for his exceptional work in stopping visitors from smuggling in contraband, Officers Barbosa Jr., Stanislaus and McQueen for saving the life of a toddler who was choking on a potato chip, Officer Burgos for saving the life of a person in custody and Officer Colina for coming to the aid of his fellow Officer after she was attacked by a person in custody. “DOC staff hold one of the most challenging, and most rewarding, jobs in law enforcement. Their selfless dedication to this city deserves to be recognized and celebrated,” Commissioner Maginley-Liddie said. “All DOC staff are heroes, but at this year's Medal Day, we honored some of the most exceptional members of the Boldest family. Our honorees saved lives, assisted in emergencies, and upheld their roles with extraordinary bravery and integrity. We thank them for their service and for their commitment to our DOC community.” The Commissioner also recognized 11 DOC heroes for their dedication to maintaining perfect attendance, which included Officer “Solid Gold” Jenkins who has not called out sick from work during his 45-year career. Officials from the Assistant Deputy Wardens/Deputy Wardens Association, Correction Captains’ Association and #COBANYC also presented medals to our correctional professionals in recognition of their heroic acts of service. In addition, a special tribute was held in remembrance of fallen hero Officer Robert H. Boom Jr., a 13-year veteran who died in the line of duty on June 18. #DOC sends a special thank you to the members of #NYPD for helping to honor #NewYorkCity’s Boldest at their state-of-the-art training facility. The Boldest family also thanks #FunkFlex and #Maino for helping to celebrate the heroic service of our members during the special ceremony. #NYCDOC, in conjunction with Learning for Life, is relaunching its Law Enforcement Explorers Program. Explorers is a leadership development program for high school and college students, ages 14 to 20. The program provides the youth with opportunities to learn about law enforcement through hands-on training, practical experience, competition, and community service. The #NYC Department of Correction Law Enforcement Explorer Post #1895 is the only corrections-oriented explorers program in the country, giving participants a unique opportunity to learn about the job of a #NewYorkCity Correction Officer. Interested youth and their parents can learn more about this opportunity by attending an Open House in Queens on Nov. 19. The registration deadline is tomorrow. “We are excited to re-launch our Correction Youth Law Enforcement Explorers program, which will give young people an opportunity to learn more about the strength, dignity and resolve that it takes to be one of New York City’s Boldest,” said Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. “I encourage those who are interested to attend our Open House to learn more about our program.” To register, visit bit.ly/3NTepwh. #DOCYouthExplorers #JoinTheBoldest

On Nov. 12, #NYCDOC members joined Mayor Eric Adams, city leaders, families and community members in honoring the victims of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 in #BelleHarbor. Twenty-three years ago, the crash claimed the lives of 265 people. Following the accident, #DOC heroes including members of our elite Emergency Service Unit utilized their training to recover the victims’ remains from the crash site. During yesterday’s ceremony, DOC Officers Oliver and Aziz read the names of the victims aloud followed by the ringing of a ceremonial bell and those in attendance placed remembrance roses at the site’s memorial. Our Department sends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victims and unites with #NewYorkCity in ensuring that their memory will not be forgotten. We also thank The Boldest for answering the call to help New Yorkers 23 years ago at the site of this tragic accident. Watch highlights from the ceremony today at bit.ly/4eufiGo.

Just before #ElectionDay, persons in custody from North Infirmary Command (NIC) and the Otis Bantum Correctional Center (OBCC) on #RikersIsland showcased their debate skills as participants in a special We Speak Presidential Debate at NIC. In recognition of the #2024PresidentialElection, the first of its kind facility versus facility debate featured the NIC team and the OBCC team delivering opposing researched arguments. Led by their captains, the two teams also presented in-depth rebuttals to help win the political debate. Since its inception in June 2024, the We Speak debate series has enabled individuals in custody to strengthen their critical thinking, public speaking, presentation, writing and research skills. In addition, last Monday’s debate is part of ongoing efforts in our Division of Programs and Community Partnerships to help persons in custody participate in team-oriented programming and remain connected to current events in society. #PresidentialElection2024
