#NYCDOC Officers inspired the next generation of public safety professionals this week. The Department hosted students from Patchogue-Medford High School to learn about the agency’s role in the justice system. Led by retirees Warden Palmer and Officer Valentine, 30 high schoolers toured the George Motchan Detention Center (GMDC) and our elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU) Compound on Feb. 25 to learn about how our heroes serve and protect in #NYC. The special visit also featured Investigators in our Correction Intelligence Bureau teaching the students about gang awareness, as well as Officers in our highly-trained K-9 Unit discussing their important work in keeping city jails safe. Interested in bringing students for an educational tour at the #NewYorkCity Department of Correction? Send us a DM for more info. #JoinTheBoldest

The Boldest Family celebrated the opening of a new wellness center for staff at the Brooklyn Criminal Court on Feb. 27. Brooklyn’s Boldest Fitness Center features a gym with a range of exercise equipment, as well as a lounge for breaks and meals. “You are asked to do a lot every day and I am going to add just one more — please take care of yourselves,” Commissioner Maginley-Liddie said during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Your responsibilities are substantial, but so is your importance to this agency and to this city.” “This is not just a gym, this is a movement that will uplift our staff in Brooklyn. Our main goal is to prioritize our health, not just for ourselves, but also for our families and colleagues,” added Officer Antoine, who led efforts with Executive Leadership and Brooklyn Court staff to open the center. This is the second wellness center created by the Department. In January, the agency opened a center at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center (OBCC) on #RikersIsland. #ICYMI: View highlights from OBCC’s grand opening today at bit.ly/3E6YQiM. #JoinTheBoldest #FlashbackFriday

As we continue our celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth today, the spotlight is on former Commissioner Jacqueline McMickens and Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie for their historical leadership in our Department. Former Commissioner McMickens made history in 1984 as the Department’s first Black woman Commissioner. She also became the first #CorrectionOfficer to advance in the ranks to the helm. In 2023, Commissioner Maginley-Liddie made history as the second Black female Commissioner in #NYCDOC. She is also the first Antiguan to serve in the top spot. ”As the second Black woman to lead the Department of Correction, I am blessed to be able to rely on Commissioner McMickens’ wisdom, experience and inspiration,” Commissioner Maginley-Liddie said. “What Commissioner McMickens saw in the rapidly diversifying Department that she led, was the need to create pathways for staff to rise. She invested in training, education and she identified talent and skills in her personnel that would empower them to thrive in their careers. She is a true leader.” #ThrowbackThursday #BlackHistoryMonth2025 #TBT
