At the HealthNext AI 2025 Summit, Congressman Ted Lieu discussed the urgent need for public access to AI models, the role of regulation, and how policy shifts could impact innovation with Cornell professor Frank Pasquale. A few key takeaways: ?? AI Access & Regulation – Currently, large language models are controlled by private companies, limiting academia & government access. ?? National Privacy Law – Advocates for a federal law similar to California’s, ensuring unified data protections across the U.S. ?? AI in Healthcare – Models need real patient data to be effective, but privacy laws limit access. Solutions must balance innovation & privacy. ?? Academic vs. Private Sector AI – Calls for government investment in computing power or mandates requiring companies to share resources. ?? Hospitals – Funding for hospitals will very like face significant cuts as Medicare spending is reduced, likely leading to inequitable rollouts and usage of AI across healthcare settings in the U.S. Great start to the day at this conference, presented by Cornell Tech, The New York Academy of Sciences, and Weill Cornell Medicine.
