“Housing is a human right. There can be no fairness or justice in a society in which some live in homelessness, or in the shadow of that risk, while others cannot even imagine it.” – Jordan Flaherty Our housing system is BROKEN. ??? Homelessness disproportionally affects the trans community. Black folks make up about 13% of the US population but over 1/3 of the US homeless population. ??? 40-60% of unhoused people HAVE JOBS but cannot afford housing. There is NO county or state where a full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a basic apartment ??? LGBTQI+ and Black folks disproportionately face housing discrimination that can prevent them from finding housing even if they are able to pay rent ??? Unhoused people spend inordinate amounts of time searching for safe places to sleep and without access to basic sanitary amenities, preventing them from looking for jobs or successfully participating in jobs. ??? Bills that criminalize homelessness mean that unhoused people can become trapped in a chronic cycle of being jailed, making it even harder to maintain regular employment and find a home. So what can be done? Many programs require unhoused folks to participate in programs and prove themselves in order to receive the basic human right of housing. It doesn't work. People need to be housed FIRST, with no conditions. Guaranteed housing has been *proven* to be effective: 9 out of 10 participants in housing programs remained housed a year after receiving housing first assistance. Providing the chronically unhoused with no-strings-attached guaranteed housing allows people to find physical safety, reclaim dignity, and earn their own income. (It also costs less!) That's why we are so passionate about our #HealthThroughHousing initiative. Guaranteed housing is KEY to Black Trans liberation and ensuring we ALL have our basic rights and dignities that allow us to THRIVE. ????? ?? URGENT: Save 22 North Housing! ?? The County Council is considering defunding 22N and displacing our neighbors who live there. 22 North is one of the only permanent supportive housing projects for young people in Whatcom County, making it a vital resource for a pathway out of homelessness. Defunding housing doesn't end homelessness—it makes it worse. We need your help to stop the County Council from defunding this critical resource. Here's how you can take action: 1. Contact your County Council members – Let them know you support 22 North! 2. Share this message – Spread the word on social media. 3. Join the County Council Meeting – Watch or attend the committee of the whole meeting at 2pm today and if approved for a vote, attend the regular meeting at 6pm for public comment. Together, we can make a difference. Don’t let our county turn its back on our neighbors. ?? Act Now: https://lnkd.in/dPpWb49n #Save22North #SupportOpportunityCouncil #EndHomelessness #communityfirst

Take a moment to read this update and let us continue to show solidarity with the student and family impacted by this terrible incident. For those of you who may not know, an 11-year-old Black student was assaulted during a school field trip in Bellingham. The attacker, who made racist comments, has been charged with a hate crime and second-degree assault. We stand against these acts of hatred and continue to push against racism. https://lnkd.in/gmKP5McT
