Five days in to caring for both of her parents who were infected with COVID, the disease comes for Victoria. Hard. Three months later, something was still wrong. The cough wouldn't stop. It took her five months to see a primary care doctor in the physician-starved Yakima Valley. They attributed her cough to allergies. . As months passed, the black hair framing Victoria’s heart-shaped face started aging rapidly, until it was grayer than her mother’s. Over a year after the cough began, Victoria finally received allergy drops that stopped the cough. Then Victoria realized the extreme fatigue that she'd thought was sleep deprivation from coughing all night persisted. Her mind was foggy. Victoria hadn't realized COVID had substantially altered her brain. One in five COVID-19 infections results in long COVID. The Latino population was one of the hardest hit by long COVID, but massively untreated, underdiagnosed, and undercounted by the government and medicine itself. It’s been over two months since houseless people in the Lewiston-Clarkston valley moved to a camp on a strip of right-of-way owned by the city of Clarkston, Washington. Reporter Rachel Sun highlights the difficulty for them to find affordable housing, with even the cheapest rentals being unaffordable for many. The camp faces harassment from some local residents—some describing cars that swerve, and sometimes hit, them in crosswalks. There is a lack of resources, including toilets, heat, and proper waste disposal. Portable toilets are opposed by city leaders, citing liability concerns. Various local support groups and nonprofits provide assistance, but the growing homeless population's needs are not fully met. The nearest homeless shelters are far away, and efforts to establish new shelters or low-income housing are still in progress. Homeless residents at the camp say they just want to be seen as people and have help finding a solution.
