As part of a Career Connect NW program, Orcas Island High School seniors toured Sierra Pacific Industries?in Burlington, Washington, yesterday to learn about careers in Modern Manufacturing from entry-level to skilled trades, sawfilers, truck drivers, foresters, engineers, industrial electricians, millwrights, and more. SPI is one of the largest U.S. lumber manufacturers and offers in-house training for many positions for people ages 18+.?

The NWESD will host a Zoom screening of FISH WAR from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. This documentary focuses on the historic fight for Native American fishing rights in Washington. Important conversations! On October 15, Career Connect NW hosted a collaboration station during the networking hour for migrant education staff from Northwest Washington at the Migrant Education Program Regional Convening at the Northwest Educational Service District 189. Groups rotated to each station and shared how they could partner to provide opportunities for migrant youth. Career Connect NW, Vamos Outdoors Project, FuturesNW, Goodwill Industries, and several other participants also hosted stations. Thank you to our Migrant Education Program for the opportunity to connect and share resources to better serve migrant students!

OSPI's Office of Native Education (ONE) supports school districts in meeting the educational needs of American Indian and Alaskan Native students. The ONE team travels around the state to learn about local Native culture from students, teachers, administrators, and community members. These trips provide schools an opportunity to showcase the work they're doing around Native education and inform ONE’s advocacy for Indigenous students, staff, tribes, and communities. Teaching Media Literacy in a K-12 Environment is a two-day class to introduce teachers and librarians to the intersections between media literacy, OSPI ELA standards revisions, and AI. This course, offered Oct. 22 and 23 at the NWESD Anacortes office and followed by asynchronous work, offers the chance to purchase 10 STEM and 5 Equity clock hours.
