Last week, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee convened for Meeting 6 of 7, where a remarkable amount of data, as well as conclusion and evidence synthesis statements, were presented. Much of the Committee discussion pointed to a need for more support of ALL Americans in implementing and adhering to dietary guidance under real-world conditions. The agenda for the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's 6th meeting is posted! The meeting will take place tomorrow and Thursday, September 25 and 26. Day 1 will include data analysis, food pattern modeling, and two subcommittee updates: - Strategies for Individuals and Families Related to Diet Quality and Weight Management - Dietary Patterns for Specific Dietary Components Across Life Stages Day 2 will include more food pattern modeling, one subcommittee report (Diet in Pregnancy and Birth Through Adolescence), federal and health equity updates, discussion, and next steps. Yesterday, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) released a report in response to the Biden-Harris Administration’s?National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health?to identify scientific opportunities, gaps, and priorities to advance nutrition science, with a particular emphasis on ensuring equitable access to the benefits of research. PCAST provided two overarching goals related to the federal investment in nutrition research: - Enhancing coordination of federal interagency efforts to strengthen the nutrition science evidence base, and? - Prioritizing equity in federal nutrition research. The report details how these goals can help create a range of nutrition interventions that strategically improve the health of the U.S. population, with a focus on those disproportionately affected by health disparities due to long-standing structural inequities which create barriers to healthy dietary patterns and lifestyles. Yesterday, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and USDA provided two Dietary Guidelines Advisory?Committee (DGAC) updates: ? 1) Registration for the Committee’s 6th meeting is open. It?will be held via livestream on Wednesday, September 25 and Thursday, September 26. During National Women's Health Week (NWHW), we recognize The National Institutes of Health's Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) for its leadership in programs and policies to improve the health of women and to support women in biomedical careers. This year NWHW focuses on the empowerment of women to take charge of their health in all stages of life, and ORWH champions this by aiming to advance the inclusion of women in clinical research and to explore the influence of sex and gender on health outcomes.
