Faced with extreme weather, economic volatility, and social unrest, driving meaningful change in rural communities through agribusiness is both achievable and profoundly impactful. At Nuru, I've had the privilege of working closely with Nuru Ethiopia, supporting tens of thousands of farmers through agribusiness cooperatives. The 2023 Impact Report highlights remarkable progress from over 5 years of dedicated service. Here are three key themes from my experience, reflected in the data: 1?? Patience: Building trust in value chains and strengthening capacity doesn’t happen overnight. Over the years, Nuru has supported cooperative unions that now achieve an impressive SCOPEinsight score of 4.65 out of 5.0, signifying world-class professionalism. 2?? Accountability: Transparency and innovation, inspired through partnerships like the AMEA (Agribusiness Market Ecosystem Alliance), deliver tangible results. In 2023, 100% of Nuru-supported cooperative unions achieved net profitability, enabling investments in adaptation and vital community services. 3?? Impact: When rural agribusinesses thrive, farmers thrive. In 2023, farmers reported a 162% increase in income over the 2020 baseline. Additionally, 91% of farmers adopted CSA practices, ensuring that productivity gains are sustainable for years to come. ?? Nuru Ethiopia has been working since 2021 with Esipe Dicha, a farmers' union that serves 62 cooperatives whose memberships total more than 10,000 farmers. By bringing smaller primary farmer cooperatives together, farmers' unions like Esipe Dicha provide cooperatives with greater bargaining opportunities as a collective, supporting improved access to quality and affordable inputs. When it comes to building self-sustaining agribusinesses, Nuru Kenya encourages strong engagement and a deep sense of ownership among farmers. Last month, Nuru Burkina Faso joined a panel discussion at the Sahel Regional Knowledge Sharing Meeting, a Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Coherence held in Saly, Senegal. USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, USAID/Senegal, and USAID’s Sahel Regional Office, collaborated with the IDEAL activity to bring together Sahel-based stakeholders from Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria for a discussion focused on addressing the regional food crisis. Nuru Burkina Faso Executive Director A?ssetou also contributed to a panel discussion called "Building and Maintaining Social Cohesion During Crisis." Participants discussed the importance of knowing the context and existing local dynamics before any development interventions.
