Our VP of Business Development, Mayra Rosado-Torres, spoke on The Boston Foundation's panel, "Building Blocks: Status of Child Care Reform in MA and What Comes Next," about Nurtury's Family Child Care (FCC) growth during her 13 years working here. When Mayra first joined Nurtury Early Education's FCC team, "there were [only] three Family Child Care staff members: We had an enrollment coordinator, a director, and a home visitor. At this point, we're now at 25 Family Child Care Supportive Staff members." This FCC support team assists over 140 small businesses run by early childhood educators that provide home-based, state-licensed family child care in Greater Boston. Mayra emphasized that expanding our Family Child Care support team was (and is) important because of all that FCC educators do: "They're educators, but they are also the directors, they are the business owners, they are the counselors to the families... We build our program from the ground up and support them in all areas, not just education.” That is why Nurtury Early Education equips FCC educators with a support system that provides enrollment assistance, professional development, curriculum planning support, instructional coaching, small business technical assistance, and family support to help connect families to developmental services and community resources. Mayra shared that her passion for this work stems from her own experience as a young mother trying to navigate the system. She was fortunate to have her daughter in a Family Child Care program and experienced firsthand how important and helpful an early childhood educator is in a child's and parent's life: "I could see the sacrifice they put into their business, and I said, I want to help families, but I also want to help educators build their small businesses.” We are incredibly grateful to have Mayra leading our Family Child Care team to empower and equip so many FCC educators as small business owners. Thank you to The Boston Foundation for hosting today's event, Commissioner Amy Kershaw of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care for providing the opening remarks, all the panelists for their enriching conversation, and the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation for their vital research and report on MA's early education and care system, which served as the inspiration for today's discussion.

Our latest innovation in early education is featured in Boston Globe Media by columnist Yvonne Abraham! Nurtury's Family Child Care (FCC) Incubator will be the first of its kind in Massachusetts, equipping educators with the start-up space and resources needed to launch their family child care small businesses and provide on-site care for children in the Mission Hill area. The incubator is designed to break down barriers for aspiring early childhood entrepreneurs who wish to open their own licensed, home-based FCC program but have struggled to find residential space that meets licensing requirements. Nurtury’s Family Child Care Incubator will provide educators with support and temporary program space to start their own business and earn income while they search for a permanent housing location for their home-based family child care program. By investing in small businesses led by women of color, Nurtury’s FCC Incubator aims to enable more FCC entrepreneurs to enter the field while increasing access to child care options for more families and supporting community economic development. Thank you to Yvonne for shedding light on this exciting pilot program and sharing the story of Julia Santo, one of our first three Incubator Residents, whose passion shines through in the piece. We are thrilled to welcome Julia and the rest of our residents to our FCC Incubator this summer. https://lnkd.in/eKC32XFa
