The petition to DHS to appropriately designate Nursing as STEM is still under review. Based on conversations in the last week, we believe the DHS decisions will be rendered in the summer of 2025. The recent defunding and firings across the government such as at the Dept. of Education’s Center for Education Statistics will make navigate the current landscape difficult, but we are 100% committed to this large scale and overdue recognition across national policymakers. ? We encourage all of our supporters to send individual letters of support to [email protected]

The inter connectivity between technology and healthcare is unquestionable and growing in importance at light speed. It further emphasizes the importance of recognizing the contributions of healthcare professionals like nurses and the vital role they play in the future of STEM applications for the field. #NursingIsSTEM
The ANA just released its latest publication on AI in nursing, and there's a lot to unpack. ?? Article: https://lnkd.in/gJeMPNus We all know AI is creeping into every corner of healthcare—from predictive algorithms to documentation automation. But here's the real question: Are we shaping AI to actually work for nurses? The ANA highlights a critical pain point: documentation burden. Nurses spend countless hours in EHRs, often feeling more like data entry clerks than skilled clinicians. While AI promises to automate notes, reduce clicks, and enhance clinical decisions, we're still waiting for that promise to become reality. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention: We're discussing "nonvalue time" in nursing when we haven't even defined how to measure nursing care itself. Without formal structures for quantifying nursing as a distinct science—separate from medicine—or standardized reimbursement models for nursing care, we're building AI solutions on shifting sand. But that's a deeper conversation for another post... ?? Here's what keeps me up at night: We've had voice recognition and clinical decision support tools for years, yet they often create more friction than flow. The hard truth? If AI is going to transform nursing, it needs to be co-created with nurses, not just deployed to them. The potential is huge—AI could revolutionize staffing, streamline workflows, and personalize patient education. But let's be clear: Without nurses at the design conversation from day one, we risk building sophisticated tools that solve the wrong problems. The bottom line? It's time to demand AI tools that enhance real nursing workflows, not just check administrative boxes. The future of nursing shouldn't be about adapting to AI—it should be about AI adapting to us. #artificialintelligence #nursinginformatics #nursingleadership #healthcareinnovation #nursingpractice #digitalhealth #clinicalworkflow #ehroptimization #nursingdocumentation #burnoutprevention #healthcareai #futureofnursing #patientcaretechnology #ethicalai #nurseadvocacy #nursesonlinkedin

The #NursingIsSTEM coalition is delighted to echo the phenomenal support from leadership from universities, hospitals, and policymakers that Marion Leary, PhD, MPH, RN highlights below. This is the largest STEM initiative of its kind because of the groundswell from leaders speaking up and speaking out. If you follow us, please take a moment to share your support with professional journals, your local newspaper, blogs and here on LinkedIn. This next push will make a big impact! ??
On our next new (quick) episode of the Love n' Leary podcast, we provide an update on the #NursingIsSTEM coalition. In August, the Nursing Is STEM board submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to designate nursing as a #STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) profession. You can watch our episode from last season to learn more (https://lnkd.in/e3M5mE37). There has been a groundswell of support for the DHS application, including signatories from 70+ Colleges, Universities, and Schools of Nursing, 50+ National or State Level Professional Healthcare organizations, and 1740 individuals, including Deans, Presidents, and others. In September, the National American Nurses Association (ANA) also submitted a letter to DHS supporting the nursing STEM movement, which included other large nursing organizations, including the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL)! We should hear back from DHS by the end of the year, but in the meantime, we are considering other routes, including lobbying Congress and submitting an application to the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This is where we need you to help us keep the momentum going! Call To Action: We need you to write letters to the editor, op-eds for your local newspapers and blogs, and commentaries for your professional journal. Post on LinkedIn. Share the Nursing Is STEM website with others and have them and your organizations sign on: nursingisstem.org. We are 4 million strong, and we need your voice and expertise to continue to amplify the Nursing Is STEM movement. We are inspired to see the formal support from US representatives including Representative Valerie Foushee from North Carolina advocating for Nursing becoming STEM designated. This is a *major milestone* in the coalition's efforts and part of growing national momentum to have nursing designated accurately as a STEM field by national agencies. "“By including nursing in STEM OPT, hospital centers in my district and across the country would directly reap the benefits,”?wrote Congresswoman Foushee. “At Duke University Hospital for instance, many registered nurses (RN) begin their nursing career as foreign nationals who have obtained their nursing education within the United States.” “This is a significant issue not only for Duke, but for other hospitals that are facing nursing shortages,”?said Theresa (Terry) McDonnell?Senior Vice President & Chief Nurse Executive, Duke University Health System. “International nurses are highly trained professionals who fill critical staffing roles throughout our health system. They enable us to keep hospital beds, emergency services and operating suites open and provide essential health care to the communities we serve." https://lnkd.in/eT_ZBzVq

"In the January issue of?American Journal of Nursing (AJN), Fidelindo Lim scrutinized the various solutions to the workforce shortage, noting that none were likely to come to fruition anytime soon. Quoting Florence Nightingale, he concluded that what is needed is “great national work.” The Nursing is STEM initiative has the potential to be a game changer" ??
AJN's editor-in-chief Carl Kirton DNP, RN, MBA, ANP, FAAN devotes his July editorial to exploring the question of whether a STEM designation for the #nursing profession could be a "game changer" that could help alleviate the nursing workforce problem. This one-pager is currently free to read. Thoughts? https://lnkd.in/efXBwy52

Classifying nursing as a STEM field will allow nursing “to access nearly $1.2 billion in funding initiatives around STEM initiatives that currently they’re locked out of,” said?Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL, co-chair, Nursing is STEM Coalition, in an interview. “Overnight, if this happened, this could be the greatest support and windfall for the?nursing profession?we’ve seen in United States history.” https://lnkd.in/esmFjWMg
